I put my Magna TS V6 in with my mechanic this morning to have the caliper seals replaced. On Monday he ordered the parts in from PBR just to save time waiting on parts. Normally, he would check the replacement parts before dismantling the parts(calipers) to be fixed. On this occasion he did not. They were the wrong parts, he contacted PBR again, and they said that they only make kits for the front calipers and not the back, but had none in stock. He rang Mitsubishi in Sydney who checked the warehouse and Dealership stock, to find that they don't stock these parts anymore. The guy at Mitsubishi saying that he checked the vin number that was given, and that vin number given did not come with ABS fitted. My mechanic argued it did, and the Mitsu guy then backtracked to say that a small number of my model were fitted with ABS as they were leading into the 1996 model. We both believe this guy at Mitsu is smoking something. My car was built in April 1995.

The mechanic rang around various contacts, where one of them had kits for the both front calipers, but only had the seal for both rear calipers. He now will have to use the existing rubber boots for the rear calipers. So now I won't have my car until tomorrow afternoon.

My mechanic told me that this was the first occasion where he could not get replacement parts for a common car that was built in 1995. I know from now on he will double check every replacement part twice before beginning the work.

Has anyone else had problems with caliper seal kits or Mitsubishi in general with parts availability?

When I rebuilt some AWD/Ralliart spec calipers front and back I had to wait a couple of weeks from memory. Damn expensive though. Kits were like $65 for rears and $75 for fronts....EACH. Second gen front calipers with the twin pots, are the same as the TJ AWD kit. Only difference is the size of the caliper bracket.

After writing a letter to Mitsubishi Motors Australia concerning the unavailability of the caliper rubber seal kits, I received a call from Mitsubishi Australia last Friday 2nd March. The guy told me that due to the high cost of these kits, that Mitsubishi stopped making and stocking them. However, they were readily available as a after market part and that Autobarn carried the kit.

After making that statement, I asked the guy if he actually read the whole letter, as I had explained that my mechanic had wasted almost the whole day trying to track down these parts. Only through his contacts that he was able to scrounge 2 full kits, and 2 partial kits, that required existing parts to be used to complete the job.

He basically had nothing to say, other then he would pass my comments onto the Service Parts area. I was not quick enough at the time to ask if he was calling from Sth. Australia, an if Autobarn was a comment outlet in Sth Australia. In NSW the nearest outlet to me in the Inner City is either in Bankstown or Chatswood.

At least I received some reply from Mitsubishi.

I went through this experience not long ago.

I scored a pair of twin piston 2nd Gen calipers for $29, in poor condition. I tore them down and cleaned them for overhaul. I rang the 2 big Mitsubishi parts places in Sydney, Repco, Autobarn, Robbos... Anyone who could possibly stock these kits.

The answers were all the same; "since that model is so old, parts have been discontinued".

I called the multibrand parts warehouse in Moorebank in Sydney, and was told that they didn't have the particular kits that I needed in stock, but they could order them, at $75 each. I drove all the way out there, ordered them, drove all the way back out there the next day, parted with $150, got everything back home, and discovered that I'd been a kit for the an AWD wagon's twins. I called the place, who refused to acknowledge thier error, and stated that it was my fault, because I'd ordered parts for a discontinued model.

I ended up giving up for a few weeks, but got lucky when the mobile mechanic that comes around to work put me onto a small brake and clutch shop, who had the exact kit that I needed, for $35 a side, and I picked them up that afternoon.

The kit from AWD models WILL fit 2nd Gen twins, as long as it's the sedan kit. The AWD wagon has 49mm pistons, whereas the AWD sedan has 42mm pistons, the same as the TS w/ ABS.

All in all, I was pretty disappointed with Mitsubishi.

Veradabeast, Your experience with these seal kits, was way worse then mine. Fortunately, my mechanic did all the leg work, and it was all downtime for him, as he could not charge me for that time. As this guy from Mitsubishi told me that Autobarn carry these kits, I have emailed Autobarn to find out if they have them in stock and the cost.
