Hi guy

Just wondering how tough the 5 speed tiptronics are in the Ralliarts and VRXs? Can they handle constant abuse and are failures common place? I have noticed quite a third gens with fluid discolouration in their trannies. Is that a cause for concern?

thanks
Louis K

Mine did 170,000 kms before it self-destructed and that was driven pretty hard for 5 years and that included half a dozen trips to the drags.

If you like spirited driving and keeping it in the high revs under load for long periods of time, not a lot. Ask Bain about how quickly they overheat and slip. That's the number one reason people buy manuals for spirited driving :)

Yep.

Anything over 4000rpm continually up and down through the gears will result in you cooking your Tiptronic auto box.

You could add a trans cooler, but i dont think it would help all the much.

I could not do a complete run of the Great Ocean Road (our normal cruise route) without running into excessive slip and over revving between gears - hence why my XR6T is a manual.

I did have the gearbox in my VRX replaced - but that was before I started driving the car hard.

I think a few people on these forums has had their gearboxes replaced or refurbished by mitsubishi.
