View Full Version : manual gear boot for tiptronic
after driving around 7000kms over chrissy/newyears i have noticed how anoying the chrome selector plate can be when the sun is in the right spot.
i have noticed that someone has done a manual boot conversion and this seems like a very cool option for me as i hate the carbon fibre or grey look of the other plates they have for the tip.
can someone tell me what the proceedure is to do this and the parts needed. do i need remove the selector plate or just leave it under the boot, what boot was used how hard is it to remove the centre console etc etc.
im sure i wont be the first to do this so as i do this i will write up a how to as well so its much much easier for someone else to do it. (unless someone who has already done it can to a how to )

does anyone know magna boy perhaps he can shed some light on how he attached the leather boot to the gear shifter etc.
he is a member of fast magna. (yes i did get this link from a previous post made on the forums about replacing the gear shifter)

all u need to do is take the centre console out
then you take the gear knob off
slide the gear boot over the stalk
put the shifter back on
slide the boot to the desired height (you may need to stretch and snip the hole as the auto shifters are very fat.
then put the centre console back in and make sure u tuck the rest of the boot underneath.

magnaboy wrote his car off well over a year ago. Was on a cruise with sum mates threw winding roads. Slid out into a rock wall then bounced off into a guard rail.
He was ok. The gearboot on em looks sweet aswell!

I thought it would be the other way around cuz there is now way the fat knob will squeeze through the tiny slot.. even with tiptronic. So would you have to take the knob off first? Do you just pull it off or screw it off?
didnt i see somewhere there is a screw in the back of the selector ?
might pull out the tj workshop manual for this one :)
might get a cheap greyish black leatherish boot for now see how i go if it looks ok in the future i can get a nice momo one.

so you push and the button and pull everything up?
there are actually no instructions in the workshop manual for its removal that i can find other than this. ill have a close look at the selector later today i have no idea how it starts to come off i asume its twisted off for now or the bottom silver thing holds it on.
can someone enlighten me i went and shopped around for a manual boot today some are hell cheap like 10 bucks for leather looking ones. im gona call mitsubishi and see if they can give me a price on a proper grey looking one.

dont twist it!!! that will stuff up the button. im sure there should be a little holding screw that you undo then just carefully pull it of. one of the guys here who has actually done this though would be the best place to start. oh and your gonna pay through your arse for a genuine mitsu one!

actually if you look at that diagram more carefully it looks like there is a nut under the button. id say gently pry the button off. take out the spring and the cap to get to the nut. undo it and the knob should just lift off. thats how it looks in the diagram but again i might be wrong.

i know for certain the th have a screw at the front
on the vrx u may find u have to take the button off and there will be a screw/nut in the shifter....(be careful when u take button off that u dont break any clips)
also...to the dude who said u should take the knob off first...u can do it that way too but the selector plate doesnt come off....all u need to do it take the big plastic console out.

My TH Sports Doesnt hae a screw in the Front :(
I CAREFULLLLLLLLY!!!!!! slid a flat blade screw driver down both side of the button.. this pushes in the retaing tabs... then the button lifts off.
Then there is a 10mm? nut on the inside that you have to undo and the whole thing lifts up.

Sorry to bring back this post but how the hell do you get that 12mm nut to unscrew? It would be now problem but the shaft is very narrow and the white plastic bit in the middle stops me from using a ratchet!!

My TH does NOT have that grub screw...
you have to pry off the top button and then undo the nut (with the deep socket)
