my front drivers side brakes feel screwed

when cold it squeels,
when at normal operating temp may occasionally experience shuddering and grinding sounds but no squeeks
when at normal temps i feel and hear shuddering, grinding and squeeking really badddly.

took it to the dealer the couldn't find anything, said rotors and pads were all good,

took it to ABS and they said 20% brake pad wear and rotors no where near in need of machining. The guy told me it could be due to the compound of the new brake pads as they don't have asbestos, but this must be a really extreme, like really extreme to be as bad as they are IMO.

i first thought it might have been wheel cleener that i sprayed on the rotors a little bit, but that would go away after 500km, wouldn't it? and it was non acid.

it has me baffled and the pro's don't seem to be able to give me a answer that would make sense.

so i ask the wonderful minds of AMC for your help

thanks in advance
Daniel

I get a slight shudder through the brakes but i've been told that's normal for ABS magnas. Something squeals (by squeal i mean slight metal squeal) when it's cold, not sure what it is, think it's brakes, but it goes away after a few brakes so it doesn't bother me too much. Been like that for awhile and haven't had any dramas, been told it's all normal. You definitely shouldn't hear a grinding sound though .

I don't think its of any relevance, but I get the same grinding sound on my non-ABS brakes too. Perhaps it is the compounds of the brake pads? I don't know what the brand of my brake pads are (mechanic put them on) though.

maybe poor quality pads.

in particular the compound of the pad.

same, except after a long drive on a hot they they start up again, sounding like i've got nails for brake pads, its really disturbing because it is sooooo loud n sounds terrible, not the average squeeky brake.

i should try some stop squeek see if that helps but no really confident it will

possibly poor quality pads the dealer chucked on just before they sold it, wouldn't surprise me....

I know I just had new pads thrown on about 3 months ago. They were the cheap ones because I was naive and didnt think they would put such crap onto cars. But when my brakes heat up a little bit theyre as smooth as falling down stairs and they grind alot (sounds like metal on metal). Took my car back a couple weeks back and they told me it was my fault  for choosing the crap pads and that I brake too hard for the crap pads and so they have glazed over. These are from Brakes Plus (brakes minus) by the way.

EDIT: Try some brake pad cleaner, it softens the brakes up and has reduced my grinding.

The grinding/shuddering is due to a poor quality pads.
An easy fix is to upgrade your pad to a good quality one.
Squealing can be common, not excessive but slight squealing is normal. You can get pads that are dead quiet but its really up to you.

Im so sick of people telling other people, especailly Mitsub service people saying that shuddering is normal for Magna's and ABS cars. It has absolutely nothing to do with ABS.

ABS ONLY EVER makes a difference in brake feel when you lock up a wheel/s when you get that thumping of the brake pedal. Other than that, ABS makes no difference to your brakes.
Shuddering is usually due to warped discs or poor quality pads. Poor quality pads wont tolerate mcuh heat and therefor transfering it to the disc, causing it to warp with excessive temps.
The grinding noise can sometimes be caused by heat spots/scorch spots on your disc once again being caused by a poor quality pad transfering too much heat to the disc. You can usually see these on your discs. They look like blue/purple roundish marks on the surface of your disc.
Mitsub and other brands of cars service guys use that ABS load of crap excuse just so they dont have to start machining discs and replacing pads. Its amazing how many people i have heard using that as an excuse and how many people actually buy it.

Out of all the different pads i have used, the one i would recomend to get rid of this would be Bendix Ulitmates. They can squeal a little but ive found it only minor and not worth worrying about. I know there are other brands other than Bendix that would also fix the problem but i havent had experience with them so cant comment.
One pad i wouldnt recomend is the Bendix Advance. I currently have them on an AWD Verada and they squeal loudly, and grone/grind.

Could also be warped brakes. Take them in for a service to someone who knows what theyre doing.

I have a guy around here that checks my brakes for nothing. He will also pull everything apart and take a look + clean them all up for $30. Great guy, honest as. Dad was told brakes in his Nimbus required replacing soon, he checked with this guy and he was like "These still have 6 months in them!". Dont see that kind of honesty these days.
