View Full Version : Ralliart - What are they like part 3

Well folks
Dream is closer to reality. A friend of a friend (knowing I am a Mitsu nut) directed me to a Ralliart Tippy which is a finance repo. Its black with a sunroof and Km is just under 130k. K's are ok given it has an up to date full MITSU service history. Body is great bar the following: some stone chips on the bonnet and the front spoiler has been kerbed. Its seems that its had some highway work which makes even more comfortable given this is preferable to constant city driving. No accident damage that I could see.
You can't test drive a repo car, but the aforementioned friend of a friend allowed me a quick lap around the block. Better than nothing I suppose, but some questions:
Will I get used to that rear spoiler?
First gear seems short in comparison to my four speed tippy verada and boy does it rev out quick - is that how they are?
Engine smooth but has deeper growl and more intake noise than the verada - normal?
Tyres are fairly good, but Hankook ventus 235's - probably no bad thing the p6000's were not highly regarded (Spare is brand new and never on the car).
No oil leaks at all.
Tranny seems to operates fine but fluid is not that red -time for a change?
Anyway, you are probably all dying to know how much. Well they accepted an offer to cover the pay out of $13800, which is pretty much VRX money. What do people think?
As I have posted in the past, My biggest worry is the Lovely Lady. She has her reservations about it being a practical family hack. We struck a deal. I'll buy it and give it chance. With any luck, she will take to it like a duck to water. If she can't cope with it, someone is going to get the opportunity to buy a real cheap ralliart (what I paid for it). Crossing my fingers but not getting my hopes up (EOIs in case I luck out will be noted via PM). Can only try.

the spoiler is up to you as to whether you get used to it or not. The first gear ratio in a 5 speed tippy is alot shorter than a 4 speed. exhaust note and intake will be different to a less tamer 3.5 and auto oil doesnt stay red for very long in an auto trans. If it is as good as you say it is snap it up. Sounds like a good ride!

im sure you'll come to love the extra gear in the 5spd... especially the due to the smoothness of these auto's.
They're a great car i can't imagine anyone not coming to like them, ie ur missus

Guys here is hoping that she is going to be ok with it. She already thinks it looks OTT and is afraid of being car jacked! Just hope the Ralliart doesn't tramline or the power scare her. You don't understand the resistance I am getting and she reckons I should grow up. I try to explain its respectable performance car, but to no avail. Hope she is not setting me up for a hiding to nowhere.
My other fear is my young boys and how the ralliart will cope with the family car role.
But you never know, she may end up loving it more than I do (here is hoping anyway)

As far as it being pratical for a family car, its a large sedan, ok the body kit maybe an issue on big speed bumps but just teach her to drive over a speed bump, 1 minute lesson (thats the extended version) and she'll be rite mate.

Ok hope this helps
Mine has the 5 speed tippy and yes 1st gear does run out quickly but it drops it right into the meat of second gear, it is so much fun. The auto is really smooth and barley noticable in D, the tiptronic side of things is sommother if you are heavy handed with it it can be a bit rough with changes if you play with it.
I dont get tramlining with mine unless it is a really bad bit of road i.e. ruts from busses or truck where they are clearly visible, but they are a rarity. I also didnt replace the tyres with the Pirellis when needed and really like the Birdgestones i put on it seemed to cut a lot of understeer.

magna/verada/ralliart.. they are all the bloody same..
1st gear is short, yeah.. but i think 1st gear in the 4 speeders drags on for far too long..
13k or whatever you said you can get it for is a friggen bargain and you wont be dissappointed..
my mum had a KJ verada, i got a TJ ralliart, and she thinks the ralliart is the better of the two..

Had my mechanic friend check her out this afternoon and he gave it a good bill of health. Engine sweet (sounds damn fruity and love the intake noise and growl), Tranny all good, no leaks. Service records up to date as per Dealer's record. Getting it tommorrow so will post some pics and give my impressions.
By the way, I know of the head work done on the Ralliarts, but what about the bottom end on these? Are they stock 3.5 or do they have special bearings, cranks, rods etc. I thought given the extra power, they would have stronger rods, cranks and main bearings given they would spend more time in the upper rev ranges Is that the case? any instances of broken rods, bearing problems or broken cranks in these engines or any modified 3.5 for that matter?
My mechanic friend can't wait to give it a service so that he can it take for a drive. He is probably the only mechanic that I have met who likes Mitsus. Reckons the third gen engines are virtually bullet proof unlike certain other jap v6 engines. He has seen one that had not had an oil change in nearly 2 years or 20k and apparently ran ok other than tappet noise - he did the oil change it ran quiet again - stuff of legends - His advice is do the belts, crank and cam seals and at least the very least 15k oil changes every year and they go forever).
Sorry about so many posts, but I needed to share in your knowledge and experience. So thanks for all your contributions.

Flat top pistons to achieve the higher compression ratio, and that's about it. The standard 6G74 has a small distance between the piston edge and the first ring, which tends to make them crack under duress i.e. boost.
All 3.5L (and 3.0L?) have 4 bolt main bearings, so they are pretty strong out of the box.
Some of the American spec 6G's received forged conrods, don't think they made it to Aus. models, but from Wiki...
"The 3.5 L (3497 cc) 6G74 is a 24-valve unit available with either SOHC, DOHC, or MIVEC DOHC. Bore is 93 mm and stroke is 85.8 mm. Output is 205 hp (153 kW) at 5000 RPM with 231 ft·lbf (313 N·m) of torque at 4000 RPM for the SOHC, 194 kW at 6000 and 324Nm at 4500 rpm for the MIVEC. The most common 6G74 has a cast iron engine block and an aluminum cylinder head. It uses MFI fuel injection and uses forged steel connecting rods.
Applications:
* 1996–2005 Mitsubishi Verada (Australia)
* 1999–2005 Mitsubishi Magna (Australia)
* 1993–2004 Mitsubishi Pajero (aka Montero/Shogun)
* 1997–2005 Mitsubishi Diamante
* 2006–present Mitsubishi L200"
Anyone wanna pull out a conrod and check? :D
