Hey, just bought my first Magna, a 1999 TH Sports 5 speed.
Got sick of my vt cause it was too slow
Just hoping you guys could help me out. im looking to do some simple mods to the engine in my car and I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions.
My budget is not real big

i'll be the first to say... if you do a search thousands of things will come up... but everyone else starts with the basic stuff eg exhaust etc... good choice in gettiung a manual as anything you do you will see more gains out of than auto.. barry, a member on here makes a few kits which are worthwhile... but yeah... just search it you'll find ten tonnes of stuff..
welcome to the club too:D
Cheers,
Trav..

Mate if your VT was to slow then maybe a magna wasnt the best choice, plenty of faster *RWD* cars out there, but i like magnas so congrats lol
Mods wise depends on the cash u have to spend, if u have money go forced induction either turbo or SC whichever suits, but if you dont have 6-8k then go with the exhaust, extractors, air intake, but you wont see much gains the cheap way!!
good luck!

VT's aren't real fast, and you wouldn't get many quicker, modern, stock cars (fwd or rwd) for the price of a Manual TH Sports.

like some of the guys already said
K&N panel filter or CAI, barry's kits (fuel rail, gasket and earthing kits), extactors, hi-flow cat and muffler, piggy back ecu or full replacement, cams and yeah the list goes on

I bought my vt expecting big things, then bout 1 year after i bought it i got burned buy a guy in a 3.0lt magna, manual. Since then I just didn't really bother with doing up my vt, now I got a magna of my own. All my mates have commodores and now I faster than them all. Its a good feeling:D

Fair enough - I shouldn't have brought your car into it.......... but you said:

Judging by the fact that he purchased a TH Sports after owning a VT, he had a budget of up to $12,000, wanted a car newer than a 97 model and faster than a stock commodore (and presumably a 4 door sedan). My point was, a manual TH sport is a pretty good choice.

yep what he sed... yep mate go the K&N to start. your car take a while to get used to it.so dont expect big things straight up. maybe extractors also

I figured a K&N filter would come into the equation somewhere. Correct me if im wrong but a panel filter would be more suited to my needs than a pod cause i live in the country and a pod would just clog up with dust all the time

It might sound odd comming from someone like me - but if you don't have a big budget, I think you'd probably be alot happier with handling mods over performance mods.
Magnas aren't cheap to get power out of - and realisitically, things like K&N filters and extractors don't give much improvement at all considering the cost of them. You've got a car that is already pretty quick. IMHO - magnas do respond very very well to a few simple suspension mods like:
H/Duty adjustable rear sway bar
upgraded springs and struts (or sport spec coilovers  )
Anti lift kit
Strut brace
I'd also highly recommend and upgraded clutch in addition to upgraded engine mounts.
Anywho - welcome to the club, and enjoy the car.

I agree totally and im not denying that its not a good choice, and yeh a TH sports manual is a great car, and yes they are quick, but he never mentioned $$$ he just said he bought a TH manual, for all i knew he could have had 20k to spend so in that case he could have had something with more power, i was just assuming, but all is good, once again congrats on the new ride mate.

OK we won't tell you thenlol .
Following on from Black Beards post, aside from the handling modifications, the only performance mod I would suggest (money/per kW) would be a decent rear muffler. If you read through the For Sale section there are TJ sports/VRX/Ralliart cat backs/mufflers on sale every now and again. Try pick one up cheap as it will give you a nice 5-8kW gain straight up. Or you could go for a Magna specific aftermarket rear muffler, but usually the 2nd hand Magna mufflers from any TJ sports model is a decent upgrade without being loud or droney.
Either way, nice purchase and I'm sure you will enjoy it. :D

Welcome to club fwd:)
I started with your mech-combo,found the best results from my k/n panel filter
and Lukey rear muffler, both relatively cheap and can install both yourself in an
hour flat, which is where your foot will find itself when you feel the extra power
above 4500 compared to now:badgrin:
