Howdy all;
Sorry, a bit of a read ahead.
I was doing some work in my car the other day and i noticed that my sub wasnt working so out came the trusty light metre to check that the power was going through the right places (the spliter block under the console and the amp). It was at this point that i discovered that there was, suposedly, no power going to the amp but the power was fine at the distro block. So i decided to unhook all the power cables etc. and check the amp itself to see if it had blown anything on it. I noticed that the fuses were blown. This caused a prompt change of fuses with new ones and with that i wired it back up. i turned the sound system on and the sub worked for about 2 seconds and then "pop pop" the fuses blew again.
SO after all that my question is What in the blue blazes is causing my amp to blow its fuses everytime that it runs?
Thanks
Uncle Andy

Moved to Car audio:

Check wiring - how have you got ur subs wired up? are there any loose speaker wires at either the sub or the amp?

Howdy all;
Everything is wired up as tight as possible and secure. Im thinking it may be a short in the power wire on the car body where it goes under the back seat and into the boot. Im going to check that cable tomorrow/today but that is my assumption

short in the power wire would result in your engine bay fuse blowing (of course you have an engine bay fuse on your main wire)

Otherwise if you didnt have an engine bay fuse and there was a short there would be nothing to stop the flow of current from your battery, your car would burn to the ground

What type of amp is it? A cheapy? Usually if its not a wiring issue the amp will simply go into protection.

You say your sub worked for 2seconds before blowing fuses???

hmmmm, Check the resistance of the sub with a multimeter. Its never happened to me but im assuming the fuses will blow if the amp tries running a speaker with a resistance less than the stable resistance of the amp. There may be something wrong with the sub in other words...

check the amp resistance stability and check the amount of ohms on the sub, if the resistance is too little on the sub for the amp you need to change subs, if the resistance is ok, check the sub with a ohm meter as it may be damaged...

sorry its late n im tired, hope i helped.

Do you have a fuse on your power wire in the engine bay? If not i'd say your power wire is shorting out.
If you do have a fuse there, could be a speaker, could be the actual amp itself that has shorted out.
Replace the fuses and unplug all the speakers from the amp and see if the fuses blow again.
If they don't blow again it's the speakers, if they do, try running another power wire to your boot (just run it outside the car for testing) and see if that makes a difference.
You just need to determine what part of the system is causing the fuses to blow by eliminating parts :).

Yes i have a fuse in th engine bay it was the first thing i did.The sub is the only thing running off the amp and its (the amp) an older Alpine V12 type (dont know what model exactly it is i got it free off guy i knew at the time). Ive unpluged the amp and replaced the fuses and then plugged it back in, still the same result. Im going to try another amp when i get the sub and amp back (needed the boot room) and hopefully it will work but im not holding my breath.
Thanks

Ehh.. i had the very same symptoms with an older model kenwood amp a while back.

Turned out the amp was knackered. Internal short. Wasnt worth repairing.
