Just installed my new Clarion unit in a 98 Alterra and from original wiring loom I used;
R to 12v+
Blu to 12v ign
Grn\Wht to Illum
Wht to Pwr Ant

RF+ to Wht\R stripe
RF- to Blk\Blu stripe
LF+ to Wht\Blu stripe
LF- to Blk\Blu stripe
RR+ to Yel\R stripe
RR- to Gry\R stripe
LR+ to Yel\Blu stripe
LR- to Gry\Blu stripe

i am getting low sound and alot of distortion.
no probs with factory unit so have i got the wires wrong or what?
the ground from the clarion is straight to chassis.

AAAHHhhh D\H i found a bad solder joint on the LF wires so now it sounds O.K. for stock speakers.
So if you want to know how to wire up a 98 model, here it is^.

EDIT might add that the wire diagram here was a mix of early 98 and late 98 with it having the late plug and the early color coded speaker wires.

i installed a Clarion into my TJ recently. Used an Aerpro wiring harness, made it so much easier, cause all i had to do was plug it in. If it is not too late I receommend you do it, only took my 5 minutes to do it all, and the harness is 20 bucks max

^ Thanx mate. if i had of known earlier i would have saved a brain cell or two but i saved $20 instead. Well actually its not such a bad thing as you know what they say, use it or lose it.:cool:
the wire left over/not in use, black with yellow stripe i think, i should have checked if this triggered the security light in the stock unit, i could have used it for a red led in the dash.
