hey all,

i was just wonderin if its legal to put 18s on my TJ. i currently have the stock 15" stealies, now my dad reckons that if i have a prang the insurance wont cover me, yet i see all these magnas with 18s and i wonder whether they were faced with the same dilemma.

so do you think i will be covered?

mags are a mod and if you dont tell the insurance you wont be covered

if you let them know you have modified the car they should still cover you but may change your premium

I know its a cliche but search the forums. I'm pretty sure that SA is the only state (which you're in) that still has the old rules regarding the 2" increase in rim diameter, all others work off rolling diameter. The other problem with larger rims is they're usually wider too, something else you must take into consideration.

Those are only the legal aspects, then you have to deal with insurance. Most/all wont have a problem with 17s usually, 18s or above start to attract extra premiums or complete denial, you should be ok though. Edit : missed the point of my post. If you dont stick to the laws, you wont get insurance regardless of age/gender/driving history.

Shop around before you take out a policy if you haven't already, I'm 18 perfect driving history with a TL, lowered, rims and got the ok for a muffler with nrma for 600 per year full comp, with justcar it'd be 2k even if it was stock.

best way is to call up and ask your insurance company!
i wasnt sure n called nrma n asked them n all they wanted to know wwas the width of the new tyre..
although i didnt end up getting rims, although if i did it would be best to ask for it in writing just so if you do crash and they have a sook just pull out thier paper

Just got new wheels myself.

Called NRMA and the advice was that they don't care as long as they're legal. Your premium might increase, but it's not a extra fee thing, it's just because you've added to your cars value, so the premium will just get adjusted for the slightly more expensive car value.

(Of course all standard disclaimers about contacting them yourself apply)

The thing with insurance companies is if they can find a Loop hole anywhere to get them out of paying for the car they WILL.... So therfore go to your insurance company and tell them everything that you have on the car or want to do to the car. That way you have covered your butt and they will look after your car. Even if you have a little prang (for example: tow ball in front bumper), if you go to claim on that and they see that you have different wheels (That you didnt tell them about), they will turn around and say Bad luck.

They are happy to take your money, but arent too happy in paying it out....
