Ok, this isnt for a magna... but i thought i'd ask anyway.. need all the help i can get.

The rear right brake caliper in the silvia (ps13) is flexing/deflecting, causing a spongy pedal & weak handbrake (caliper attached H-brake, not drum).

Does anybody know what would cause such a thing? I honestly cant see why it would do it, but yet you can visually see it deflecting when the pedal is pressed.

Thanks in advance!

worn pivot pins replace the slide pins that go in and out as the caliper works

better still a new /exchange caliper

Cheers for the reply,

but i swapped the slides from left to right hand side of the car (from LH caliper to RH) to see if it would make any difference, but theres still flex.

New/exchange calipers or even second hand are getting rarer and rarer for these cars unfortunately.. i havent been able to find one yet.

The slides on these arent on the actual calipers, they are in the brackets & the caliper bolts to rear of slide. I'm guessing the actual bracket is internally worn where the slides sit...

Extremely wierd.. it only happened after removing the caliper to replace pads.

The whole story is, inner pad was worn extremely uneven. Removed caliper to find dist boot hanging off the piston (undamaged). Refitted everything & spongy pedal.

Funny because the pedal was never spongy before removing the caliper; but the pad was wearing extremely uneven (possibly due to caliper flex... but how if there was good pedal feel?).

a brake specialist may fix them for a price !

replace both sides or mounts slides worn in the caliper/ dont risk it

ty for advice.. i'll have a chat to a few blokes 2morro & see what the go is.

Sorry to ask an obvious question, but after you refitted the caliper, did you properly bleed the brakeline? Also what condition was the rotor in? Did it need machining?

No i didnt bleed the line.

Rotors are good, were only replaced 5000kms ago.

They're not seized... and they werent when i removed the caliper either. which is the wierd part.

The caliper moves very freely.. just it flexes once it reaches pressure, which is what is causing the spongy pedal.

all brakes flex a little i think you either have a sezed slide, busted master clyinder or air in he system. these are the most commin causes of a spongy brake peddal. if the pads have worn uneven 1 of the slides may be sticking.

Yeh i know.. but most flex isnt easily visible; this is. It moves at least 5+mm's.

All 3 other calipers are fine, its just this 1 that flex's for some reason. Trust me, the slides arent seized! They were actually very well greased, and slide quite well!

clamp off the brake line and see how it feels then. if it feels good somethings not sitting right
if it feels the same with the clamp you have a problem somewhere else
