View Full Version : Shudder in AWD TL VRX

Hi all,
Over the last few days under load whilst traveling up hill in 5th or 4th I have been experiencing a shudder at or below 2000rpm, which translates to about 60kph or slightly less. I stopped off at the dealer today to have the fluid levels checked and they took it for a drive and the bloody shudder didn't happen. Anyway the tech said there has been some similar problems with Pajero's which has been solved by flushing the transmission. Converter shudder they call it. However they suggested that I do this flush at $180 odd expense to me :bowrofl: Warranty I say. Just wondering if anyone else with AWD's has experience anything similar, as the transmission, doesn't seem as smooth as it used to be in regards to shift quality. Infact I hate bloody autos, Invecs sucks, but I love the AWD.

Just had mine flushed etc (all drivetrain) and new tires all round. Fixed that annoyment. Check your tires first - blew me away how much better the car feels in smoothness, steering response and economy. I'd thought I'd lost a wheel or killed my suspension and was freaking out 'cause it all lined up within specs. Could've saved a LOT of time by looking at my tires...
If your tranny fluids are getting scheduled servicing it's hard to imagine any hassles except with low levels. My AWD has done 108000 without a hassle. Gearbox is still solid except of course for the invecs 2 madness. Notably 1-2nd when off-throttle and then throttle to go again, and the 1200rpm 60kph hillclimb in 5th stupidity.

is this sound like when it really needs to kick back a gear (say from 5th back to 4th going up a bit of a hill) but it doesnt and makes a weird surging-like noise because it is revving so low and struggling in that gear and it wont change til you put ya foot down a bit more??
mines started doing that but its gettin fixed tomorrow, hopefully its just a fluid flush and it will be fixed..

If you are referring to the jerkiness, yeah that peeevs me as well.

Mine does just that except there is a shudder, feels like a slipping clutch. It annoys me with the torque converter lock up that at 60kph I put my foot down to accelerate and the revs just drop, so I put more of a boot in and the revs drop more to the point of the car really laboring, then it decides to shift down to forth.
Now when approaching a hill I shift manually, but if Invecs is that smart this anticipation by the driver shouldn't need to happen. I read somewhere here on the forums that someone reckons they had the trans ecu flashed for better shifting. Do you fellas now anything about this???
Please let me know if the flush fixes your problem.

Same here. I was worried that something was wrong.

My TL AWD VRX gets the 1st-2nd hesitation, like driveline lash, makes the wife complain, and if the wife isn't happy, I'm not happy. Is suppose I can look forward to the 5th gear shudder later on.

Your car thinks its a diesel truck too does it? I find it quite funny that it just motors away at 1000-1200rpm making one hell of a noise.

Yep thats f**king annoying. Half-assed design if you ask me.
I've been meaning to build an intercepter to resolve the issue, but havn't had the time. Need to work out how to get the 'box to kick down, preferably without affecting anything else.

Yeah our KJ AWD does the same thing shifting into 5th and locking up the torque converter at 50km'h as Craigo said, it really ****s you because you want to speed up uand it drops the revs as it locks up.
I have a slight shudder but mine is in 1st and slighly 2nd gear when taking off. I'm certain its the driveline out of balance. Bugs me bigtime. One thing that really makes it noticable is when i reverse out of a car park, and have to put it in drive quickly and step on it quickly, ithe rear shudder is more noticable.
Also, anyone else noticed this, when i back out of my driveway and then put it in Drive, the long pause aside(which also bugs me), it makes a loud clunk noise from around the transfer case. I'm sure its the rear driveshaft taking up slack. It is really noisy, and its only when you go from reverse into drive actually after reversing, not just shifting through gears. Its like a loud clunk from under the middle near the front. Very loud from inside and outside. Quite embaresing acutally.

Had a word to one of the service guys at MMAL, and he told me to get the car booked in at a dealer and report the fault/problem. He said its Dampner shudder, and if left unchecked can cause problems down the track, as the torque converter shudders/vibrates, which in turn causes the transfer case splines to generate some slack etc etc. So off to the dealer again to have the problem reported and have the system flush.

they reckon it was a crap batch of fuel because i told them i had a bad run not long ago.. reckons a flush wouldnt do much, if anything.. trading the car tomoro possibly so i told them not to go too overboard..
its still there, but no where near as bad..

I get this huge clunk in the Jeep, but not my Magna. Just the yawning delay for the g/box to select "D" after reversing.
What do we know about the gearbox and drivetrain apart from it's Evo RS origins? I think Heathyoung discovered the rated torque ceiling of 510nm - is this still reliable Heath?

It is AFAIK, but I don't have any way (or intention) of testing it :) Came from the gearbox design specs diagram, which perished in the great HDD failure of '06. (Now run a raid 1 config grrr...)
As for the clunk noise - well - mine does it sometimes (not every time) the mitsubishi mechanics had a look and readjusted the handbrake, and it no longer does it very often (once a month if you are unlucky).
Jeep - hmmm... Our promotional Jeep with ~5,000Klms just blew out the front passenger side caliper, and sprayed brake fluid over the wheel, paintwork and underside of the wheel arch. No brake fluid at all - erk.

My TL AWD clunks, from the rear, when going from forward to reverse, typically when parking.
Talking about Jeeps, our Cherokee clunks from the rear when you do anything while moving, turning, braking, accelerating. Its got OME springs with 1 1/2" lift blocks and Rancho shocks, but I still can't stop the clunk. I'm going for greasing the slip yoke next.

I get the clunk also when changing between reverse and drive. Would anyone advise I bring this up for a warranty claim on my next service?
