View Full Version : Cluster is stuffed.

Well I finally get around to putting those Reverse Glow Gauges in today. Well not only were they dirty, plain hard to clean, I got two of one display, and none of another. And to top it all off, I couldn't get them to work. (Before anyone says anything, this is the first time I removed them from the packet since I recieved them in the mail, I've only had a chance to deal with them today.)
But that isn't what I'm really worried about.
I stupidly removed the needles off my Tacho, fuel and temp gauges, not realising the way they operate until I saw the coils underneath! (DO'H!)
So now I have three stuffed gauges. The temp and fuel gauges do not move at all, and the tacho tries to move, but it appears like it gets stuck as it moves, until I initiate a signifigant gain/drop in revs, at which point it tries to move but gets stuck in a position again.
Please help me somebody, is there anyway I can repair this myself, or will I have to take it to my local workshop to get looked at.
Any and all help appreciated. Thanks!
Daniel.

sounds a bit like you have pushed the needles on a bit far and they are dragging on the face of the gauge.
Try gently lifting them up a bit on their shafts so they clear the face.:D
You should be able to gently move them round with yur finger and they should twang back when you let em go.

You would be correct my friend!! lol Yeah I looked and was like "Hold on a sec, I'm missing one! GRR!"
I will try both ideas! Thanks ol' fart and Twunka! I'll bring you all the results on the flip side!

There is a well written thread not to remove the needles, I am wondering if anyone even bother to read.:doubt:
Sorry not having a go at you but that seem a little careless of you. So what about the temp and fuel guages? Bad?
Grab the cluster in ebay now then, its probably worth it.

Since you are in Newcastle, there is an excellent guage repair place in Carrington - VDO - they will repair and calibrate your gauges for you.
I agree with comments on removing needles - leave the guages the hell alone!

Ahh thankyou very much Heath, I always thought my fuel gauge was out just a tad... now I've got reason to take it over there lol
Yes I agree with all comments, careless, I wasn't saying it wasn't :P I just needed some help! :D
Now I've got heaps, cheers everyone!
Heath, do you have a rough idea on prices for VDO?
Thanks,
Daniel

no need to take needles out coz the gauge is flexiable so u can slide it over.
if your needles are getting caught that means either you have put them on to tight or the gauges ares sticking up so u have to glue them on with a little ( and i mean little, just a couple of drops one near the center of the gauage and then the other anywhere else its sticking up.
if you rpm needle is out pull the neddle out and start you car up and let it warm and get to its normall idle range and push the neddle on then.
and if your fuel gauge is out now then just wait till ur next fill up, fill her all the way up and just re locate the neddle.
the speedo neddle wouldnt stuff up so if u have taken the needle out just put it back on and make sure its on zero (go for a drive with a met driving next to you andmatch his speedo so if his doing 80 u should be on 80 next to him)
theres like a billion post about these installations and im pretty sure theres more then a couple on M4DDOG's for sale thread bout this.

Give them a ring, I'm sure that they will give you a quote...
Its been years since I have been there. They are VDO dealers, I cannot remember if they trade under the VDO name - have a look at instrument repair in the yellow pages - they are near the school.
