Hey

Hokies simple one, When my car is idling with the clutch out theres a rattling sound that comes from the engine. But clutch in all is silent. The TF still performs the same just theses a sound when the clutch is out. Any Ideas?

Its been there for a while just never worried seeing though it doesn't affect the car. But seeing though Im tryin to sell this bad boy though I might query it.

Thrust bearing, is that a 'bad' thing? I did a search on that and most people say it gives off a high pitched sound. Mine sounds more like two peanuts rattling in a plastic container (sorry for the explanation, that just what it sounds like to me).

Also long as it isn't guna sh*t its self anytime soon im okay with it.

Definately thrust bearing bro, i had my TF's replaced roughly 50K ago and no dramas. Yeah sounds really bad then place clutch in and all gone. Funny thing was car was in warranty when i spoke to mitsubishi and they checked it and said all good. Soon as car came out of warranty hey guess what mate your thrust bearing is rat ****.......Funny that!!!

defintly thrust bearing.. no point in replacing it.. wait until your clutch plate is finished, then get it all done

had exactly the same problem with my lancer recently....Thrust bearing. As mentioned its usually a high pitched whine, so the rattling may indicate a badly damaged bearing or an outside chance of something else on the clutch.

is it bad or just an annoying noise?

edit: will it do any damage to my car or is it just the bad noise?

mine has started making the same noise u describe, its like a rattle and can onyy be heard if you listen carefully and as soon as you put the clutch in it goes away

Just an annoying noise no damage i saw in mine once they pulled it out. So noise you have to put up with until time comes to ploace in a better clutch or do some repairs in that area.
Or you can throw in a huge zorst be fully sick fully loud fully illegal and hopefully fully not hear the rattle:redface:

Cost for this will really just come down to labour, I know the thrust for my lancer was only about $30. Not sure what the labor would be, as the box will need to be separated from the engine and the clutch removed, could be a good 3 hours for an Remove & Refit of g/b.

as stated you be silly to replace only the thrust bearing..either wait to your clutch is finished OR if you do want the thrust bearing replaced straight away put a whole new clutch assembly in while the gearbox is out

holy crap...
Rang Mitsi... $95 for an hours labour just to diagnose it.
This is refundable if I get the work done through them at the end of it.
But taking it to Quinn Motors tomorrow. They specialise in Manual Trans apparently, and he is happy to have a look for free.

i wouldnt worry about it. its just a thing that manual magna's do. its nothing major, it wont hurt anything anyway.

sif you'd stand for that! You brought the issue up under warranty, they let it go, and then brought it up out of warranty? no way man should you have paid to get that done!

Well got mine checked out tonight by a specialized manual transmission place.
Its not the thrust bearing.
Its the drive train bearings, there is a few of them. They are tapered roller bearings.
$1200 for labour and kit. Hes going to check my clutch, thrust bearings etc for me while he has it all out.
So getting booked in tomorrow :(
Damn I was just about to order my new Morels   sorry FHRX, later :(

Whats the cost of a new clutch? Are heavy duty ones much more expensive?

mate for the modifications you have on your car, their is no way you need a heavy duty clutch. Not only are you gonna get no reliability gain from it, your not gonna get a performance gain from it either, all your gonna do is spend more money and end up with a heavy clutch that your gonna hate everytime your stuck in traffic

and umm.. stupid question coming up but whats a drivetrain bearing? i've never heard of that before.. and my googling is coming up with nothing!

I was only wondering about the clutch as I tow a ski boat, but yeah prolly not worth it.
I realise you don't get any performance gain :P

As far as the bearing name, I can't remember exactly what he described it as but i thought he called it something like that, he showed me them on a similar FWD gearbox. I am trying to find them in the workbook manual now for you. If not I will ask him tomorrow what the proper name is.

Edit:
Think I found them. Am trying to figure out a way to get pic up, but its on the input shaft with all the cogs. Am pretty sure they are the ones he was talking about.
There are 2 normal ball bearings and 2 needle roller bearings.

Its in the workshop manual on page 20 of 48 under Manual Transmission - Manual Transmission Overhaul.

Don't go a heavy duty.....they are to heavy not for our cars. Try a Daiken clutch or exceedy, better for the car and you'll get more out of it.
