View Full Version : Too damn Hot for fans....

So when I bought the Magna a few months ago I was told it had Air Conditioning and that the second switch simply had the switch broken, which was why I could only use the cars fans.
So happy with the dealerships explanation I shelled out for the car and headed up to my local Mitsu wreckers to locate a new air con switch. Surely enough the mechanic there sticks his head under the bonnet and informs me that the reason i have no switch is because the car doesn't have any Aircon.
Needless to say, I wanted my damn A/C...went back to dealership and pointed out that the car had no A/C and the dealer responded that he never mentioned A/C and he didn't know what we were talking about...after a good 15 mins of arguing I went to fair trading and simply filed a complaint.
5 days later the dealership totally shut down and I was left with no air con and stinking 40degree summer days to look forward to.
SO can somebody tell me if it's possible to put another 2nd gen Magna's aircon system into my Magna, and will it cost an arm and a leg? If not, will it cost me much to get a new air con system put in car?
Thanks

My friend used to get an compressor for his camry for $180.00 within that range.
It should be installed by someone certified.
I advise you to see how the complain goes and follow through before you install anything.
Cheers!

You need a mechanic who can install for you cheaply. Find out the price of the compressor unit first. It shouldnt be that bad.
Check the Wreckers

Thanks mate :)

It requires removing the dash and installing the heater/AC unit as a whole.
Then you need the compressor and mounts, hoses, TX valve, condenser (radiator thing in the front) and a receiver drier.
All of this can be gotten from a wrecker although a new receiver drier is required (about $30 or so)
Installation is a long fidly process, but is not beyond a home mechanic.
Then you'll need to get it regassed. $70 - $120 incl gas, oil and labour.
If you have a good wrecker and a good mate with tools you can get it done for about $400 - $500
If not..up to $1000 or more
New..........
This is assuming the car aint fitted with ac at all. Get someone to see what parts you do have

Alrighty mate, thanks for that...might head down to wreckers tommorow and see if I can locate some of the gear needed, my Dad's mechanic should do It for me resonably cheap...i hope :P
Oh and all I have for cooling is the fans in the car.

Thats costly, on this topic, I wish ALL car dealers that mislead with this aircon thingy should be FINED! I find it too often they lie about this by saying oh it needs to be regased etc.
If its damaged or not there just say so. damn it!

Mate I so hope I stumble across that smarta** little salesman so I can stuff him in the boot and drive round Australia. Worst part was he lied straight to my face, and then told his boss WE were the ones who were lying
Anyways, did all the 2nd Gen TR GLX's like mine not have aircon?
nope, i have a TR GLX and mine has it. I was pretty surprised how well it works too.

The GLX was the base model, mainly for fleet, its lower than the exec and the A/C was an
option.

hanssup exactly WHO has *DONE* it before here...
sounding like lots of talk, no experience?? :doubt:
Me did it on my TN.

yes its possible
your best bet is to go to the wreckers and see if they can sell you a "kit" for a/c
which they have ripped out of a factory-a/c'd car. This would include as minimum:-
1) compressor & brackets, belts
2) evaporator, often with fan box
3) condensor
4) electrical bits
Dunno exact going rate for the kit, estimate $500-700.
If you're thinking of buying new, you'd be looking at
-compressor $800
-evaporator with fan box... who knows? would need to be originals from Mitsu
-condensor $400
-fan/s $150 each
(yes we've gone this route before too, installing a/c into an Alfa Spyder)
The hoses etc would usually be chopped so they're fairly useless but a good kit
would include the hose stubs to the components... which a good installer
would be able to weld up to new ally tubing.
It is a pretty big job, minimum 8hrs for the bits installed then electricals & gassing.
Total would be half a week for someone who knows what he's doing.
You do need someone experienced in doing high-pressure lines too otherwise
once you start filling it up with gas at $100-150/pop... it gets real expensive!
Definitely not a DIY job unless you're a qualified gasfitter plumber type.
I talked the fella at my local Natrad to do mine, cost me $1200 all-up driveaway.
I preferred him to go source the preloved kit from the wreckers himself as then
if it turned out that the compressor was bung or the condensor was holed
- it'll be 100% his responsibility to get it all sorted out.
(very common with untested kits from wreckers!!)
His work was pretty first rate, but still a few minor niggles...
1) few wks in had a loose union joint which dumped all the gas... ah well
2) system was improved with uprated seals to run R132 gas, which runs hotter.
This pumps a LOT of heat into the engine bay - so make sure your COOLING system is good.
I installed a few extra radiator fans... had 3 in total... which caused an odd problem
3) compressor started cutting out from the voltage drop when all 3 fans running.
Wierd problem which took a lot of ingenuity to solve... turned out the relays the electrician
used for the compressor, fans etc needed full 12V to trigger and nothing less. I went to
wreckers and ripped some original Mitsu relays ... then everything worked fine.

Been there done that. :P :D
If you can get a wrecker that lets you pull parts yourself do it.
Youll get to see where it all goes, youll get the pipes in one piece and if ya break something....get it off another one. :D
The second gen stuff is mostly on the new gas...check the car you take it off for the R132 sticker.
Get all new O rings for it too...they are about $1 a piece from an ac place.

Im thinking that for these prices i'd rather just wind down the damn window lol
For that much money and time I could do so much more to the car looks-wise and give it a bit more go...hard decision.
So you're saying $1200 for aircon unit and installation mate?
jump on ebay and do a quick search for 'verada' - someone is selling KS parts cheap as. Air condenser among other things.
