Hey guys, big news flash.
On monday I purchased my first car, it's an old Magna TP. The catch is that it only has 10000 kms on the clock (10825). I'm sooo excited, it's practically brand new. Some little old lady owned it since new and has hardly driven it at all, it's been kept in the garage all it's life(No Rust!). Everything looks brand new, from the body to the motor. It even goes up our steep hill better then our old Toyota Sportivo which was new in 2003. It is in getting a tune and check up at the moment but I will post pictures as soon as possible. I do have a few questions though; What pressure should the tires be at? (they were all around 18psi)
What oil and fuel should I use to get the best efficiency out of the car
Are there any other hints and tips to keep this old girl running like a dream

Thanx
Jam

Hi Jam, sounds like very nice car. For fuel: standard unleaded. GTX2 for oil. Tyre pressure: 29-30 PSI. Change oil at 5000km intervals. post photo soon :D

Nice!!! Sounds like you got a better deal than me! Went on a cruise the other day and I had the least kms on mine out of all the 3rd gens. :D

Be sure to get it serviced every 5000-10000 kms.

Best oil for the job is Carltex GTX2 20/50

I normally put unleaded 91 octane fuel in, and then put some premium or super high 98 octane stuff in sometimes just because it cleans out the cylinders better.

There was a point where I only put premium in for a month, it felt like it was pulling harder and it also started and idled better. It's purely up to you what fuel you want to use. :)

If you look at the little plate near the drivers seat when you have the door open it will have the recommended pressure for each tyre, rear and front. It says to use 28-29, but I use 30-32 because my mechanic where I get it serviced says you can get better fuel eco if you use it a little higher. This all depends if you're using the stock 14 inch rims and tyres.

On a side note, may I ask how much you got it for? If you don't mind me asking.

WOW!!!! I remember seeing a 1st gen on ebay with 30k kms on the clock but never thought I'd ever see 10k kms in this day and age. What model is it (ie elite, elante....)? Could be worth quite a fair bit to someone who wants a prime example of Australian automotive history.

Do you think it could have been wound back? Does the trip meter roll over? Sometimes dodgy yards buy dash displays which they work back, often the trip meter gets killed in the process.

Stupid image limit... the other pictures have links

Payed 3000 for it, do you guys think thats a reasonable price. It was either this or a magna 95 model with 145k kms on it.

Actually to think about it thats the most complete 1st gen i have seen, tho i recommend you change the fuel filter and ignition leads, these age over time

Yeah im not putting him down or anything. I love how the paint and body is in perfect condition. Now i know how nice my old 1st gen looked like when it was new.

If you are looking for one just to drive around and not do any mods to it, I think money spent somewhere else might have been better. If you really are into the 1st gens, then 3k for such a good example is worth it.

It looks genuine, you got a bargain, $3000 is not a big price to pay. :D

arrrggh u lucky bugger. shame it wasn't efi but u can't get everything. 3000 is a bit of money but worth it for such a low klm 1st gen. NO magna on here has that low klms on it for sure. It's time like this that make me want to cry. year and a half ago i paid 1400 for an unregoed tp efi executive with 98 000klms on it and i thought that was low, then i replaced everything mechanical i could and got it registed , (bought paint for ot as well, gotta finish the elante kit first) so all up it owes me 3500 and now has 120 000 on it. so id b glad to be in ur shoes. but do urself a favour and replace all the fuilds and filters in the car, but other than that u won't have to spend much if anything on it , as long as u service it regularly it will treat u good:D

for those kays thats great. for better performance you may want to try and do the efi conversion. and if you did get a third gen for 4 grand it would be crap anyway

good stuff man wen i bought my first 87 it had 150000kms on the clock for a 18year old car at the time, the guy who owned it had kept it in his garage all the time, he mainly drove to church and back, and i had about 55 reciepts for everything he did to the car.

and i was told by heeps of strangers at car parks saying it was the best looking magna they had seen 4 the age.

But u have it even better, 1 thing to do above all is to tint it. it will keep the interia in tip top shape!! plus it looks good as well.

cheers dean

And you'd get a piece of sh!t 3rd gen with 200k kms +.
$3000 is a steal! He's basically bought a brand new car, doesn't matter that it's not the latest thing out.

Well I'm glad you guys approve haha. I have gone out and got some mats and a wheel cover (gosh that thing gets hot) and I will get seat covers next. I also took the louvers off the back so it looks a lot better now.I have been driving it a bit, but only round town to do little errands. My main use for it will be to tow a 60kg worth of boat on a 100+ kg trailer. I will slowly work it into this as I'm sure the motor will be under a big strain if i go out straight away. I am putting the car in to get a tow bar on friday morning (they need to order them in lol I was scared they wouldnt make suitable tow bars anymore) I will definitely consider tinting to keep the interior in good condition. I also need to get new wheels for it as the old lady must of driven by brail (the hub caps are mega scratched up). After all that I'm planning on putting some audio in it as although everything is brand new it's only a tape/radio player and some very old poor quality speakers. Where do you suggest I install the speaker... was thinking doors maybe... wat would be easiest?

Thanks again

Congratulations on the purchase. I bought mine a few months ago with 67,000 km on the clock and thought that was good. However it had a few problems that needed fixing so was not nearly as good as yours to start with. I only paid $500 for it unregistered but have spent about $2,000 on it since. $1,000 of that was rego + new tyres all round. CV joints and new battery were $400 and the rest mostly cosmetic stuff. So my total cost was only slightly less than yours but I am happy because it runs and drives like new.

Look at it this way. If you bought an average 1st gen. from a dealer you'd have to pay nearly $2,000 for a respectable looking one and it would have 200,000 km plus on the clock and probably need money spent on repairs. For $3,000 you've got a car that's nearly as good as new and should last for years. You should be even happier.

If you don't already have one, consider getting a dash mat. It helps protect the dash, keeps it cool and stop things like maps sliding off it.

A trailer as light as that shouldn't be a problem. I suppose it is too late now but you could easily pick up a second hand towbar for $50 or less - a coat of paint and it would be as good as new.

As for the wheels, if only the hubcaps are damaged, a set of generic 14" wheel trims only costs about $30 and would fix the appearance until you are ready to put mags on it. Keep an eye on the for sale section of this site and you'll occasionally see mags from the Elite or SE models at a reasonable price. Elites are 15" so you'd be up for a full set of tyres as well. I'm not sure about the SE - might be 14" - hopefully someone here will know.

Speakers are usually put in either the doors or the rear parcel shelf. Neither is particularly easy as there are no existing cut-outs. The subject was recently discussed here. Hopefully this link will help:

Grill is TN, and not all TPs had EFI (my old one didnt).

It's a TN.

And a damn nice one, personally I wouldn't have paid that much, however, for the condition, I wouldn't complain.
Paid $1250 for my elite with abit of rust and engine fairies, but that body condition you can't beat.

Any plans, sell it to MMAL... self storage? lol
