Well, here is my short story:
I got a gear knob, that is attached to the stick by 3 little (4mm) screws (those that get tightened with an allen key). Now, during driving, the damn screws loosen themselves as the gear knob comes off.
So off i went to bunnings, and got some drills and tapping set, to increase the hole size of the gearknob and make a new thread for the larger screws (6mm), so i can tighten it more.
Anyways, it feels stronger now, but i noticed that the screws still loosen up. So i went to autobarn and got some kinda loctite stuff (3rd hardest stuff) and thought that might fix it.
Well, it still kinda got loose, but not as bad.
So, running out of options, what else can be done to secure the damn knob properly? I have a short shifter kit, so shifting is heavier, which is why the knob gets loose.
I was thinking maybe a thick copper sheet around the stick, where the screws will dig into. As copper is soft, and it will just dig into it.
Otherwise, maybe some kind of epoxy? I dunno.
Has anyone else had this kind of issue?
same reason i put my stock one back on couldnt get it tight enough, kept spinning around

they normally come with some rubber caps that you stick onto the gear stick before you put the knob on
did it come with any?

Try to find a screw on type knob mate, there the go, i doubt you'll have any loosening problems then...i know i nearly broke allen keys trying to get mine to stay tight...:bowrofl:

They werent rubber. They were made from plastic. And yes, it is inside the gear knob. Its just to stop the gear knob from moving at the top of it. Less stress for the screws i suppose.

as well as lockite have u tried that white plumbers tape. that they use to seal copper pipes and such. it stretches very well around threads. just a thought anyways

Use fuel hose or any rubber hose that will fit. No more screws

Yeah, i might go to CLark's Rubber or somewhere and see if they have any rubber that is similar to the plastic piece. And wedge it in. That should stop it from giving too much movement. Will let you's know how it went

Use I size smaller plastic sleave, it's tight to fit, but once it's on it hold much better, you might get the knob turning some times but it won't slip off.

EASY FIX!
Fill the inside of the gear knob with araldite, stick on, leave.
Done.
Note: Youll never get it off again however.

Did you get a standard gear knob when you got the manual conversion kit mate?? if so - I recommend using it.
I purchased a wanky "momo" gearknob off ebay for about $50, had 1 go at putting it on, decided it was a piece of crap and put the standard one back on.
Does the job, doesn't come loose, I don't need to spend too much time looking at it so I don't care anymore.

Well, i couldn't remove the standard knob from the original shifter without alot of force (using 2 huge wrenches), which resulted in damage to the knob.:)

u must thrast the **** out of your gear knob. mine is a cheap one with the lil allen keys screws and hasnt moved or loosened since i put it on... the stock leather one however - was facing sideways cos that was the only way i could screw it to get it tight  :doubt:

Speaking of gear knobs, I was pretending i had a manual in my auto, and the button flew up and hit me in the face and scared the absolute poop out of me.:bowrofl:
So now i'm changing gear with the piece of plastic that is underneath the button

If you want, i can give you my auto gear stick button. I still have the whole gearshift assembly.
So far, the knob hasn't come off yet. I think that loctite had to sit for 24hours to harden properly. Will see how it goes the next few days

loctite without a doubt has quite an effectiveness on screws; so much so to the point whereby I am about to ninja headbutt my supplier for using it on their notebook screws because the damn things wont budge. obviously you need to let it set properly first, though.
had this one time, we had two guys trying to pry open a notebook screw held in by loctite, where the head was no bigger than the seed you would regularly find within a tomato... weird analogy, and also weird that it took two people to unscrew it.
oh yeah, and we had to replace the screw.. the thread was damaged in such a way that if it were returned to its original location there was a definite chance it was *never* coming out again.
