Well rang Bob Jane today to find out about getting some new wheels fitted, Motegi FF7 18x7.5, GTVi's come standard with 17x7.5 wheels and 225/50/17 tyres.

Width 225
Aspect Ratio 50
Rim Diameter 17"
Speed Rating V
Load Rating 94

The Motegi FF7 comes in a maximum size is 18x7.5 and @ $275 per wheel I thought it's not too bad.

Then the guy at Bob Jane hit me with a bomb shell, the only tyres available to fit on these are either a brigestone valued at around $450 per tyre or a Michelin @ just under $400 per tyre. The tyre size required for this wheel to keep it as close to my standard diameter as possible is 225/45/18 .

I've done searchs through these forums and read all the threads relating to this but havn't found anything on alternatives to this tyre except to change to a different tyre size and wheel. I would prefer to go with the 18" wheels and lower the tyre profile to keep the wheels & tyres as close to the standard diameter as possible but if it's going to cost me $1600 each time I need a new set of tyres well that's just stupid.

Has anyone here come across this and found a cheaper tyre in this size or at least know why this particular tyre size is so expensive.

that particular size is so expensive as it's uncommon 235/40/18 is the most common 18" size and you will find they are much cheaper thats due to that size being std fittment on comm/falcs

i once had 18" tyres that were $485ea due to the size :doubt:

you wont find the correct tyre profile and width much cheaper or have as much as a selection in an 18" and dont bother going to a 19" if you wanna keep things legal either

i suggest staying at 17"

even my 20's are cheaper than that lol

DONT BELEIVE A THING SAID AT BOB JANE!!! Just basing that on my experience with my local store. The guy there tried to tell me it would cost (at the cheapest) $240 per tyre for 215/50r15 profiles. I then looked around and saw wheel and tyre packages for bigger rims and tyres from $999 so I said "well I'll get a wheel package then", n he starts trying to sell me an 18" wheel package (illegal without cert.) that costs $1500 n I kept saying nah man I just want something for $1k. He even put one of the 18s on my car to try and convince me. I said to him "you got 2 mins to get that off my car or I'm driving off with it".

To shop at BJ you really have to research their prices then go in and tell tham what you want exactly.

GTVi's come standard with 17x7.5 wheels and 225/50/17 tyres.

No GTVi's come standard with 17x7 wheels - which would make 235/45R17s (which no doubt they will try and sell you) technically illegal.

As for 225/50R17s with 94V - ring around. I picked up Falken ZE329s for $210 each, Bridgestone Pontenza G3s can be $225-235 each

The guy at Bob Jane's is taking you for a ride = ring around - their only tyres for christ's sake

Be aware that the diamater of the rim being more than 2 inches over is a OLD law that no longer applies......... Its the WIDTH of the rim nowadays, and on a magna based on weight you are able to go to 51mm over largest available width on that model.

There you go, bigger rims bigger tyres and bigger cost to everything just be prepared.

My 16 inch was $150.00 each and I was complaining already. lol

Is the kind of thing you must be prepared for I guess.

Mate, I use to work at a bridgestone centre part-time, some of the guys there often used the line you got about the tyre size, I can tell you 95% of the time it wasn't a real issue but rather a way the make extra cash. If 225/50/17 is standard as you said, than you can have up to 2 inchs (5cm) more than that (legally). Overall height inc. wheel and tyre of a 225/50/17 is 53.75", in a 235/40/18 (the std cheaper 18" tyre) it is 54.4". Less than an inch difference, so Bob Jane are trying to milk you, try another BJ store, I've often used BJ and had no worries.

Thanks for all the help guys, I know of a few guys here are using Maxxis MA VI 235/40/18 but I thought they only worked on the 8" wide wheels, if they fit the 7.5" that would solve my problem. I will make a few more calls tomorrow and see what I come up with. I'll let you know the results .

You can put 235/45/18 on those rims.

225 is a much more uncommon sized tyre, hence the price.

You should be paying around $300 for a decent tyre..

Of course you could get some crappy tyres like Andrewd has.

I usually ask for used tyres, and inspect them first.

I picked up some 16" GoodYear rubber for my KE for $40 a tyre (80-90% tread) and some 17" rubber for the old TR for $50 a tyre (80-90% tread). Usually from people who buy new rims and leave their old ones behind.

Very happy considering im only gonna wear em out.

never get them tyres lol

even awd cant mask their low grip plastic like compound, the plus side is though even though my car has lots of neg camber and a terrible wheel alignment and i drive it hard it's done over 12K so far and the tyres arent even looking worn

Well I did some ringing around and the 235/40/18 doesn't fit a 7.5" wheel. I'm getting the same story from everyone I ring 225/45/18 costs $380 to $450 ea I can't get around it. I was begining to lean towards upgrading to 18x8's but to do that I would have to pick a different design I think my best option is to stick to the 17" Wheels that way I can still get the wheel design I want and just use my existing tyres.

One guy from goodyear actually said to me that I'm better to stick with the 17" wheels because they will provide a softer ride and won't wear as quick as the 18's would. Since he had nothing to gain from saying this and in fact he was throwing away a potential sale I have to believe him.

Mikeee ,why change your wheels? GTV rims are really nice. I 've got TL VRX rims in the same size (17 x 7,225/50/17) and i 've used Goodyears GSD3 F1's (great tyre) ,and now i ve got Michelin's Pilot Preceda 2 which cost me $250 per tyre. I dont think that upgrading to 18's will improve your car much. Most of aussie roads are quite bumpy and you need that extra bit of air to help with ride comfort....

Mikeee
22-02-2007, 08:19 PM
Yeah I just like the look of the 18's they fill up the wheel arch better which imho looks a little empty on the gtvi with 17's. Other option is to lower it but I wanted to avoid that as it is already factory lowered which looks cool enough for me plus it will be a lot more friendly on speed humps and my steep driveway.

I've just been quoted $300 a corner for Goodyear F1 Eagles, 225 50 17 from Goodyear here in Canberra. They get fitted Monday or tuesday.

If they're $300 a pop here in Canberra they should be less than that everywhere else in the world. For some reason we get to pay more for everything!

This is true
When i was shopping for my rims, i asked the price for them with decent tyres, i forget the brand, but i think it was just their home brand tyre they were gonna do for me, they quoted me $3500!! Went to tyrepower (knew someone there mind you - although it was only a mate of a mate) and got them with the second highest Toyo tyre for only $2300. When i was at BJ i asked for their best cash price (and i actually had the money). They weren't even willing to negotiate.

I paid $750 for 4 Goodyear GSD3 F1's .They 've had it at special price buy 4 pay for 3...Anyway ,i beleive they are a great tyre. Fantastic in the wet, but even in dry conditions excellent grip. Now i am running Michelin Pilot Preceda 2 and they are not as grippy in the rain, in the dry they might be a touch grippier. On e thing with F1's ,i 've had 3 punctures on them (all nails ) ,i dont know if it is just a coincidance,or someone hates me at work lol . Also chanells on F1's are quite wide and stones get stuck in the tread often. I would of got another set of F1's ,but they are out of stock, which might explain the price you 've paid.
