Hiya all,

Just bought a TL Magna and am wondering what mods are most recommended.

I'm trying to go more for response than outright kW.

I've gone through RPW's website, and it seems you can do a million and one things to it, but I don't wanna pour my life savings into it!

The thinking so far is as follows:

Rear muffler (heard you can get 8kw just by changing this!)
K&N filter panel in stock airbox (not sure about doing pod just yet)
RPW Throttle body (meant to get response sooner than stock)
Extractors (any old set off eBay ought to be better than factory)

I'm still iffy about replacing the catback piping, so any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

FIRST: Id strongly suggest not buying any performance part off ebay unless it IS a performance part eg. Pacies or RPW etc. 'Any old set off ebay' will be a waste of money.

Second: Simple strategy to follow with NA cars is the I/H/E way (Intake/Headers/Exhaust). There are a fair few options when it comes to base magnas especially on the exhaust/headers side of things.

Intake: Go with a K&N drop in panel filter. Its legal and gives better response. Or you could go with a CAI setup, either custom or bought.
Headers: Two mainstream options are RPW or Pacemakers. TBH i dunno which one is better, the Pacies are cheaper than the RPW but they are the same style.
Exhaust: Lots of options here. The easiest being swapping the muffler for a VRX/Ralliart muffler. Next being either a Lukey/Redback or some kind of cannon muffler. Then you can get a full Lukey/Redback system (pipes & muffler). Then the most expensive; a full custom system. Chucking in a high flow cat is also a good idea if you wanna spend more money. For the exhaust the best size to stick to is about 2.5", maybe could go smaller, but no bigger unless your gonna supercharge/turbocharge the magna.

Id also suggest buying all 3 of barrys kits; fuel rail/gasket/grounding kit. I think roughly they cost $225 all up and are easy to install. THe fuel rail will give you back the lean out problem which is caused by the K&N filter.

Id tend not to worry about changing the TB until you have done the I/H/E first.

On my car im going the K&N, RPW or Pacies (cant decide yet) with custom mandrel bent piping onto a Ralliart/VRX/Lukey/Redback muffler (depends whats cheapest when time comes to do it) with a highflow cat + barry's kits.

I suggest you check this out aswell.

Your basic outline of mods is sound. As Oxford said, get proper extractors. The RPW and Pacemaker units are a decent tuned length design. After that for a budged setup I'd just change the rear muffler like you already planned.

For intake either a Panel replacement like the K&N or a K&N oval pod. Both will benefit from a decent Cold Air Induction (more important on the Pod as it would otherwise suck in hot engine bay air).

Sh*t... I think I might just drive it for now.

It'll be a while before I have the necessary bank...

Take off the rear muffler and get pipe made up in it's place, I did that, gave a nice note, but sounded hollow, isnt overly loud either but mines manual. With the exhaust just get a differet muffler otherwise, dont bother with piping, it's 2.5 inches already.

Extractors I'd go pacy's, cheap and RPW havent been proven to be better, they just say they are $440 + fitting is what you'll be looking at for pacy's. There worth it just for the better exhaust note they give. They do give better perfromance to lol

Intake, K&N pannel and put bigger pipeing on the front of the box if you want noise from it, take off the snorkel and it'll sound like you got a pod filter on it but suck's in hot air (well just like a pod filter actually)

What's the issue with using pod filters on TL's? I've heard that unless you use the oval shape one from K&N, you get AFM problems?
