that doesnt sound good
I just dont see why it would shift so hard into 3rd and only 3rd, why not 1st into 2nd or 3rd into 4th, does anyone know why it would only shift so rough into 3rd gear??
Any help would be appreciated!!

Im not 100% but i would say that it does it only in 3rd because it is the only gear that operates off those clutch packs.

i dont know if the 2nd gen and 3rd gen autos are based on the same idea....but my auto used to make my car feel like i was going to be thrown out the windscreen when it kicked back from OD to 3rd. felt like i had hit the brakes a few times then decided to put it into gear lol.
mine also used to slip out of OD from time to time....until it never went back into OD lol

my thoughts exactly on the auto....but i got qouted minimum $2000 for it to be reco'ed:confused:
im waiting on a manual gearbox and all the other stuff frim jetblk and then im on my way to get the manual put in
btw, if your car is doing the same as what i described, there is a good chance (i mean like 99%) a service will fix it

matty befor you start to panic check oil levels and oil colour of your tranny. all it might need is just a service. start of with the simple things first.
my car was doin that but not as violent as you say yours is and after a full tranny service all was good.

Yeh it was the first thing i did man, fluid levels are fine as well as the colour.
It was just serviced recently also, but yeh the kick is quite rough indeed, its very noticable.

Reading an article on AutoSpeed where they demonstrated an ATF change on a 97 KE, they changed the fluid etc.
The Auto Tranny Service Dude stated the clunk into 3rd gear is an issue with the software/computer. In the article they disconnected battery for 10 secs and reconnected. Issue went away.
"The first step in the transmission service/flushing process is to take the vehicle for a test drive. This is an important step to identify whether there are any faults that the owner might not be aware of. In this case, our Verada had developed a thump when shifting into third gear – more on that later. "
........then further on in the article.....
"A thump into third gear is apparently quite common in Mitsubishis of the late ‘90s. While the trans flush will almost certainly improve shift quality across the board, the real problem is with the Mitsubishi transmission electronics. The industry ‘fix’ is to disconnect the battery for a few seconds, reconnect it, start the engine and cycle the transmission from Neutral to Reverse and Neutral to Drive at least five times. This process serves to reset the ECU that controls the transmission and let it relearn the sensor signals for each gear position. Shift quality will continue to improve over the next few kilometres.
After a transmission flush and ECU reset, our Verada no longer thumps into third gear and overall shift quality is noticeably improved - but only just. And, now that we know the trans is in good condition and has fresh fluid, it’s important that we make an effort to keep it serviced regularly. "

Disconnect the Battery and reconnect!!!!
A TPS adjustment usually fixes this also (need a scanner plugged in to work out resistance on TPS). Don't worry, tranny itself is ok.
