Hey Guys,
Recently noticed that when i've got the A/C on my accelleration is alot better and my engine makes a werrrrring noise when running. Also i've noticed that sometimes it's really hard to brake when the A/C is on. Very strange. Any ideas? I have a 94 Verada KS

no idea on what thats about but the engine does rev higher when the ac is on do you have it on econo mode or full aircon ??

Mine loses acceleration dramatically!!! I hate it.
Sorry to hijak but
is there anyway on a 3rd gen to improve the efficiency of our a/c so that we dont lose as much power???

it should loose power as all a/c does in terms of performance is add resistance to the crank...
Therefore you need to minimise it, would need to try some lighter pulleys and belt combinations or even do some work on the a/c compressor, but who realy would be bothered lol.
I don't have a/c atm but i have the compressor there... on my sohc motor it didn't make too much of a difference, i noticed it more on my bro's auto rada...

Somehow i cant see acceleration improving with the A/C on, actually its impossible. The werring noise is more likely the compressor.
NFI about the braking issue.
I think that apart from the werring noise the other two are 'placebo' affects as such.

at wot the compressor disengages, well thats what happens in my car anyway
so performance at full throttle isnt that badly effected

Anyone know the difference between econo mode and full a/c? I was wondering this the other day, I mean the compressor is either engaged or it isn't or is it something to do with the duty cycle changing when its in econo mode?

The climate control will turn the compressor on or off as required in econ mode. If it's left in the power mode, or the non econ mode or whatever you want to call it, it never turns the compressor off, so you'll end up with either an igloo or a dutch oven for a cabin.

endlesseulogy:
When the A/C comes on, your idle-up motor will compensate for the extra load by increasing your idle. Depending on how high that is adjusted, you'll find you are starting off from a higher number of rpm which may be placing you closer to your engine's power band.
So when you hit the throttle, your engine doesn't have as far to rev before it starts making more power.

Yeah thats right Dave AU. On the full * mode, It stays on much longer but you will notice that it will go off every now and then but yeah, it stays on much more.
I use the econ * mode for the cooler winter months. The climate control only puts it on when needed if the sun warms the car up a bit or to help get rid of some humidity.
I use the full * mode during the hot months especially use it when it is humid. Stays on much more to get rid of humidity. If it gets cold, just turn the temp up a bit but the A/C still stays on even when heater is on to help dry out the air.

the noise being heard could be from the electric fan for the AC condensor
From memory the gear shift pattern is changed when the AC is on, so the shifts are later, producing the impression that there is more power. On the TP's, there was a switch for power/econ for the transmission, on later models (And the TP) when the AC is on, the trans is forced into power mode while the compressor is active.

Yea thats sorta weird, ive had two magnas TR & TF and both the engine performance and fuel economy go to sh*t when the AC is on. But goddamn magnas have the best Air con, my mates VS Commo is like a soft breeze compared to the blizzard that comes out of the magna.

Yeh same here, performance and economy goes down, that was for my TR and my TJII. Fuel economy is only about 1L/100kms worse, and power loss in the TJII isn't that evident, but in the TR it was very noticeable.

When I have it on ECO mode in my TJII, i can't seem to notice it ever actually stopping. What I would have expected is that the air keeps coming but it stops cooling the air once it reaches the desired temperature. And pumps out more cold air as needed to keep it at that temperature. But mine jsut seems to constantly pump out cold air. The fan adjusts accordingly but nothing else. Does that sound abnormal?

Sounds normal. In econo mode you will notice your compressor engaging and disengaging more often than normal mode.

does the tjII come with an a/c econo option????

What i think may be happening there is actually the air coming out will always feel cooler cause it is moving - ie: on a warm/hot day, stand in front of any old fan in a house and set it on its lowest speed - the air will "feel" cooler cause it is being pushed - but in actual fact the air is exactly the same temperature.....

If you have a model with climate control yes.E.G sports, vrx or verada.:D
