View Full Version : The dreaded "SHUDDER"

I have a '99 TH Magna 3.5 auto. I have noticed a problem that seems to be slowly getting worse. Anything above 40kph while maintaining that speed I occasionally get a shudder. It is like driving over corrugations and either goes away after 2-8 seconds or can be gotten rid of by accelerating or braking. I have just had my auto flushed and serviced, timing chain and all other fluids replaced, new quality tyres (235,45,17) and a wheel alignment.
I have read similar posts and can't find a problem exactly the same as this so I am hoping I have given enough information for someone to help me.
Cheers!

Maybe Its the CV's I think they can cause a car to shudder, Well so I Hear.

CV joins are noisy more so when you turn you get the " clunk clunk "
might be a maf? issue if altering the speed changes it does it have the same feeling in different gears at the same speed

Yeah, it's only 3rd or 4th gear and only when you are trying to maintain a constant speed. I haven't had the CV's checked but there are no typical signs like clunking or any sort of grinding. I am taking it in to a mate at the tyre shop tomorrow to see if he can find anything obvious. Also, what is maf? I am not up to date on all of the abbreviations yet.
Cheers!

MAF = Mass Air Flow Meter or something like that.
The little square box behind your airbox, measures the airflow into the engine and sends this info to the engine computer (ECU) which uses this data to calculate fuelling etc.

Flush your transmission with 10 litres of transmission oil, purchased from Mitsubishi spares. Search the forums and you will find the instructions on how to correctly flush the transmission through the radiator cooler lines.
The problem is due to vibration from damper clutch, caused by ATF breakdown/contamination.
Only use genuine auto oil, it's cheaper than the others anyways....

I have just taken the car back to the mechanic and although we don't have an answer, we have discovered that it only seems to happen in 4th gear. I am going to drive the car around for the next few days with the car in 3rd gear to confirm our suspicions. In response to MitsuMad's suggestion I did confirm with the mechanic that only the good old factory transmission juice was used and the levels, etc are all good. This may mean that it is something mechanical in the transmission. Any ideas guys???

well i have the shuddering to and i have (well got told by another member) narrowed it down to being the driveshaft. mine happens when car is under load for example accelerating from a cruzing speed.
Jo-King had this problem in his verada and he got a lot of parts replaced and nothing solved it. once he replaced his driveshaft (about $40 second hand) problem wa fixed.
mines going into the shops on monday so will let ya know if changing the drive shaft solved my problem.

According to the experts I have either a buggered torque converter or a buggered clutch in the torque converter. Oh well, this means that the whole transmission has to come out. I will be finding out what it will cost in the next few days and will also let you know whether it fixes the problem.
While I am here I would like to say that I am a fair dinkum idiot. Ever since the Colt, Sigma and early Magnas I swore that I would NEVER own a Mitsubishi. I didn't listen to myself and now look what has happened - I am going to have to spend a small fortune on fixing the damn thing. Now if only I can find a match...........

Well the extra flush failed to fix the problem. From what I have been told now from supposed experts, it is probably the torque converter.
A manual upgrade you say??? Is it hard to do or expensive to get done? Maybe I might drive it off a cliff and buy an old orange Volvo lol

Why dont you do the driveshafts first since they are cheaper. If it isnt the shafts you could always sell your old ones and recoup some of the dollars. Worth a try before you tear out the tranny and do the convertor. Start with the cheaper items and work your way up to the tranny/convertor if you have too.

Yeah my VN shuddered, Torque converter was rooted but disconnecting the TPS fixed it (yes im a dodgy bugger) tho is also created a new problem with gear changes
Go the Manual Conversion :)

$2500 was the cost of repair. We confirmed that it was the clutch in the torque converter but it also needed additional work. Apparently these autos are known to die as early as 60,000klms. Now that the auto is fixed I am sure that something else will die. At least I will have a good looking car in my driveway even if it can't move :rofleek:

my magna had a shudder in every gear, and made huge clunking noise if i turned left not so much right, the gearbox was ****ed in the ass, didn't justify spending 2300 on a new gearbox for car that done 215k, when i wanted a manual anyway

tis drive shafts, mine always had a shudder under heavy accelerating when i got the car, then one night after a good flogging, shudder turned into uncontrollable vibration with little acceleration. 550 for new driveshafts installed. no more shuddering at all

Yeah well the bloke who fixed it showed me the clutches and they are very thin. I couldn't believe how thin they were and now understand why they died so easily. I think that the only way to prolong the life of one of these automatic transmissions is to stick the car in neutral whenever you are decelerating from anything close to 100kph. Ideally, I would love to get a big jar of Vaseline and shove my gearbox up the correct passage of the idiot who approved this gearbox because they are so useless. Next car is going to be a Holden!:D
