My uncle has a series1 380 and since about 15,000km it has a squeal from the rear brakes.

It has been into the dealer a couple of times and when it has come out the squeal has gone away, but soon after comes back. The vehicle has done about 40,000km and he had genuine accessory alloy wheels fitted about 5,000km ago. He asked the dealer to have another look at the brakes and again the problem was fixed (lasted a little longer this time) but has since come back with a vengence.
The dealer said they would replace the pads for him but they will only use genuine, we both think the 380 has great stopping power, but we are worried genuine pads won't make any difference.
Have any other 380 owners had this problem with the rear brakes ?
He is willing to purchase his own set of Bendix (or aftermarket) pads to fit, does anyone have any suggestions on what to fit to stop this noise ?

Cheers

I've got a Series 1 with just over 16,000km, and no noises from my brakes yet.
Does this noise happen when the brakes are warm, cold, or all the time?
I'll keep the audio down perodically to check my brakes when in use.

in your honest opinion, is he a heavy braker? Sometimes if your a heavy braker your brake rotors can becomme glazed (i think thats the correct term?) and that can cause the squealing. My magna is used as a courier vehicle and im the first to admit i am heavy on my brakes, so after a few thousand k's mine always start squealing aswell. I have tried both genuine brake pads as well as bendix aftermarket jobbies with the same results, so i dont really know what you can do about it.

My mates dad suggested to me that if you clean all the brake dust off your wheels every week, including the hard to get at areas behind the spokes, you dont get the squealing, his theory being that the rotors get "glazed" as he calls it from brake dust getting between the pads and the rotors, thus causing the squealing, so if you keep the brake dust off the wheels it limits the chance of dust gathering on your brakes. I have never had the patience to test this theory but he swears black and blue that it works and so does his son. Perhaps something you could try?

Cheers, I might suggest he tries that before he puts new pads in.

I would say he is a fairly heavy braker, I know I am. I happens worse when it is cold and seems to get better as the brakes warm up. When I have driven it and it happens I floor is and slam my foot on the brakes a couple of time and it makes it mainly go away except for a little squeak.

Fit slotted rotors on all wheels. The slots, besides remove gas build-up etc also deglaze
the pads and remove dust as well.

doing that will make the brakes warmer and therefore the quealing will be less noticable, however your actually only making the problem worse, i would not suggest you do this

Series 1 with 34,000 on the clock. Heavy braker at times, no signs of any squeels or other noises from rear brakes.

Not me either, 25000km and only the occasional squeek when cold.
