View Full Version : Quality of finish - Mags

I was wondering if anyone has Advanti or Apec wheels or any other cheaper brand of wheels and have had them for a couple of years, what the quality of the finish is like now. Does the chrome or black painted bits start to peel or flake off. Do the machined lips loose their finish compared with more expensive brands.
I am looking at shadow/gun-metal/painted/machined wheels rather than straight silver.
Some of the stuff Bob Jane or Tempe tyres sells seem really cheap. Is it cheap for a reason ?
Can you give me example of actual experiences.
cheers

From my experience when looking at buying wheels.. I was looking at chrome.
The cheaper brands sucked major ass, flaking and fading and all kinds of stuff. I ended up going for ROH, a while back a dinged my rim, right on the lip, and the chrome didn't even flake around the ding, or crack, or anything. just polish up the edges and you can't even notice it. I'm really happy with it.

Unfortunately, rims are another one of those things where you get what you pay for...
There's a VERY good reason why you can pay anywhere as little as $1500 to as much as $6000 for a set of 18's and rubber.

Second hand Jap or European wheels are the best go. BBS, Enkei, Volks, Works, O.Z Racing etc.
The price of these second hand will cost as much as a brand new set of cheap tempe tyre/bob jane t mart wheels, but wheels are an important part of a car's dress up. So if you've got cheapies, others will think "errrr no taste" or "i've seen those wheels on a corolla" (let's not get started on zeneti 18" wheels. Oh my god ) Plus the top brand and well known wheels are a lot lighter and a lot more durable, not to mention the extra street kudos hehe
Please consider buying some top wheels :D
If you're not sure on the brands, pm me and i'll give you a list of top jap/euro wheels to browse around for.
No cheapies!

Up to you chief. Tempe wheels aren't of best quality. If you're looking for bling bling chrome, then i guess tempe would be your one stop. But if you're looking for quality jap or race style wheels, shop around for some second hand top brand ones. Tempe specialise in chrome etc. but if you're looking for good set of euro/jap race or stylish wheels, then i suggest looking around :D
Tempe don't stock the reputable brands like Enkei, O.Z racing, Works etc. They have copy wheels. Like, their copy of Rays Gram Lights and AMG copies
Eg. Check out the pics. First one shows the originals. The second pic shows the fakies. The originals say "Volk Racing Wheels - Rays Engineering" on the spoke. But Tempe's ones says "Vork Racing Wheels - Ravs Engineering" in the same font! How embarassing if you're in traffic lights and someone spots them out. Ricer alert
And people actually buy them!! They could've bought the originals in second hand condition for the same price. The originals are lighter and tough. And won't start peeling in the sun. Not to mention the top reputation of the genuine wheels. Plus I could bet these rubbish fakies weren't forged on a 50 tonne press.
So don't follow the crowd! Check out other places and look for some premium branded wheels. Best bet would be pre-loved ones!

Im not sure what youre classing as 'cheaper' wheel but Advanti arent cheap (unless they are selling discontinued rims)
I have a set of 19" Advanti's on my car and they have been the perfect model of quality (that i expected) since day 1.
Ive had them just over a year now, no cracks, no flakes (except the 1 rim i dropped on my wheel nuts), still shiny and smooth. Removing tar from the rim is easy and doesnt scratch the rim like lesser quality brands.
A few things about Tempe Rims:
Their chrome rims are plated (spray on) not dipped (prone to cracking/flaking). A true chrome dipped rim will cost in excess of $600 each!
Most of their rims use a very soft metal as there base (prone to warping/bending from pot holes etc) - The paint used to colour the rims is of poorer quality.
A guy at a dyno day had bought rims from Tempe and had em fitted just before coming to the meet.. When he put it on the rollers you could see one of his back wheels was warped.. (from Tempe direct)
Ive been over plenty of potholes and hard bumps that would fracture lesser quality rims.. The advanti's just keep on trucking on..
Looks for something unique.. Best bet is to look everywhere else but tempe as you can guarantee some ricer will have a set of 'quality tempe rims'

I have 18" ENIX rims on mine, apparently they are a cheaper brand of wheel... They are full chrome, Ive had em for the past 4yrs n not a single problem with them at all...when they are spotless they are brand new look
The other thing to consider with chrome is the plating. The 'splatter' spray stuff, when flaking, will flake and show the base metal.....= ghey. Proper chrome plating will be plated 2-3-4-5 times, so that even if a top layer does flake a little, theres still another 2 or 3 layers of chrome beneath it.
Anywho, with the finishes other than chrome, I don't think it matters as much (machined is machined). Generally the quality doesn't come down to the finish, its more the base rim style/quality and materials more than anything.
You get what you pay for.
Bob janes have some alright wheels in my book. Tempe....well....thats debatable.

My basis for the "cheap" wheels comment, is with Advanti, Apec and RJR (Bob Jane) I can get a set of 17" wheels and tyres for under $1500. The rims themselves are an average of $200 each. Wheels like ROH or Speedy for the same size are around the $300-$350 per wheel. I know chrome costs more, but I'm not looking at chrome.
What category would you place the following:
Koenig
BSA
Speedy
CSA
ROH
As there are styles in these that I like.

What are the rims youre looking at from Roh and Speedy?
Some rims come in 2 or 3 peice design (which add to the price - and quality)
Speedy and ROH pretty high....BSA are below average. CSA average. Koenig....never seen

all the above brands are mid range price, quality will be above average compared too the cheap china copies
17" wheels and tyers can cost as little as $650-800 new
have a set of 20" advanti with polish rim and gunmetal grey spokes np at all

In Speedy I like 'Cheetah' and 'Envy MkII' (both 18's I know)
ROH I like 'Fury' and 'Vapour'.
Konig I like 'Unknown'
BSA I like 349, 334, 315, 291.
in the cheaper wheels I like:
RJR - 'Illusion', 'linear', 'Vogue', 'Chopper', 'Panther', 'Quake'
Advanti - 'Flame', 'Medusa', 'Havok' (same as RJR Illusion), 'Photon'
Is it any wonder I can't decide

Honestly ok,
Koenig: Got some nice designs but once again, it's a Tempe tyre wheel. Nope.
BSA: Piece of sh*ts copied Volks (Vork Racing) and O.Z Racing (B.Z Racing)
Speedy: Cheap. And crap. No thanks.
CSA: Nope. Cheap. Low quality. And see them on too many corollas and other riced up cars.
ROH: Good. Only good brand out of the lot. Nice designs and good wheel construction.

I dunno bout a white car, but I reckon they would look pretty sweet on a dark green one ;)... Are the spokes a chrome or just a painted colour ?

ROH Vapor in chrome can be seen on my avatar. Keep in mind if you're TE-TH they will stick out a bit in the front.. nothing too major, but you do notice it.. unless you have VRX flares.

i went looking at wheels yesterday after finding out the wheels i've already waited 2 months for will be another 8 weeks away (grr).
even looking at wheels from the same brand, the cheaper ones were obviously lacking in quality compared with wheels a little more expensive from same brand. especially evident on the machine finishing, the cheaper wheels had lots of machining lines and pitting in the clear coat, whereas the more expensive ones machine finish was smooth looked like chrome.
new wheels i'm looking at getting are $500 cheaper than the MAK (italian) wheels i was getting so hopefully not too crappy :-/

Yes, I was pronouncing it as Koh-nig so I spelt it that way.

I have pretty much decided on ROH Vapors. I was settled on the Shadow Chrome, but now seeing them in Chrome, I'm thinking hmm  maybe. Dunno how they'd look on White. Not normally a fan of Chrome with white.
Can anyone recommend a place in Newcastle area that I can get 17x8 Vapors for less than $295/wheel ?
cheers

OK I caved. I had to go the interest free route. I ended up at Bob Janes, and got a set of 17x7.5 RJR Illusions with Michelin Pilot proceda2's in 235/45/17. The tyres cost more than the rims, but they look great. I got a wider offset so they sit just inside the flares at the front. They look really good. Will get some pics up soon when I get a home while the sun is still up.
The thing I liked about what BJ did, is they painted my calipers black, fitted stick-on balance weights (out of sight) and chrome valve stems and caps without me having to ask. I am completely happy with their service.

You fill out a form, they enter it into the computer and GE money throws credit at you. Basically I got a line of credit, so I didn't have to pay a deposit, no repayments and no interest for 12 months. After that they can sell my children off for slavery, but the general idea is you save up and pay it out when the 12 months is up.

in my experience ROH are esaily the best of the affordable wheel brands. their quality is far above others in the same price bracket. i dont know if anyone is aware of it but they make nearly all the factory wheels for aussie built cars. if you check on the inside of your factory VRX alloy for example you will see a ROH stamp. same goes for falcons and commodores. they have been making factory wheels for many, many years, so i reckon they've got the runs on the board. also sometimes the expensive wheels eg.Enkei bring out a cheaper wheel brand with a new name to target a different market without cheapening the original name. these wheels are built to the same high standards they just dont have the "big name" branding on them. food for thought.:)

Oh wow those are awesome, my cars white and ive been toying with the idea of some mainly black with a lil bit of chrome rims (seems to be the new craze) but was unsure of how it would look on a white car...
I got some money i need to blow and im hopeing for something similar to what you have, in about the 19" size :)

They look a lot better than my crumby pics make them look. They make the car look much more aggressive.
The wheels with nuts etc cost around $190 a piece, the tyres were $215 each. All up with lock nuts and alignment, I got out of it for under $1,700. And I don't have to pay a cent until this time next year ..... GOLD !!
The Wheels are one of this month's specials at BJ. They are called Illusion and are 17x7.5. You can get the same thing from YHI (Advanti Havoc), but I think you'll pay around $215 per wheel.
BJ also have a similar wheel with wider polished spokes and only 5 black spokes called Chopper.
