View Full Version : Should I Paint My Calipers?

I was washing my wheels the other day and started wondering if i should paint my brake calipers? If I were to paint them I would probably only consider gold or gloss black paint.
My friend has a dark blue R33 Skyline with gold/bronze calipers and they look great.
At this stage i'm undecided but leaning towards gold, but I could be swayed in either direction by you guys. Here's a couple of pics of my KJ if it helps.

Gold is great not sure you can find the paint though, I have seen yellow and red and silver or blue easily. Yah but gold is nice. I have done mine red and is easy to do.

If by Gold you mean a darkish gold, i reckon that would look sweet! You don't want them to be too bright in colour, IMO.

well it depends dont it,
do u want to make the calipers looks hot, or do u want the calipers to match the car and improve the overall look of the car... HUGE difference.
red/burgandy would suit, or paint them black ... personally i think black

plannin on doing this do mine soon.
paint the whole caliper in white and then get a mitsubishi sticker and stick over the white. then paint the caliper in black and when dry peel the sticker of and then you will be left with sexy black calipers with mitsu in white :)
might sound silly and extra work involved but will look sweet

might not work , calipewrs are not a polished flat surface there are tiny pits in them so it would be likely to bleed inside the lines, however if it works then top job

Yes paint them. I did mine Orange but it looks red in some lights. It makes them look so much neater. Let me know if you want some pics of what i did and i will send them to you.

Would be nice to see how you fit em, and how they look once fitted...
I think you should paint them black.
By giving them a bright colour you advertise how tiny the magna brakes really are.. (especially if youve got large rims).
Personally (which ive done) - I prefer to show off my large wheels over tiny non performance brakes..
Heres mine painted black.. (http://members.optusnet.com.au/miltonf/car/ford/xr6t/cruise/gorcruise1.jpg)

So in other words you are more like hidding the caliper rather then showing it?
I mean thats the feeling I am seeing for those who suggested black, not that is a bad choice. Is a certain way of looking at it I guess.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think i'm still leaning towards gold/bronze paint for the calipers. I think it would be a better contrast against the colour of my KJ.

Maybe try getting slotted or drilled rotors instead - should look a lot showier...

Ok, i played around a bit on the modifymycar.com (www.modifymycar.com) website with some predictions as to what my KJ might look like with different coloured calipers. Red is definitely out as it looks too racy for the overall look i'm going for with my Verada. Now i'm tearing my hair out trying to decide between gold and black (they both look good)! Who thought something as simple as deciding which caliper paint to use would cause me so much stress! :bowrofl:

And once my current discs are gone i will eventually switch to slotted rotors. And yes, i know the location of the calipers is off in the above pic :P

Depends.
If they were Brembo's or aftermarket PBR calipers and discs id show them off..
My point is stock brakes looks rediculously small when aftermarket/larger wheels are put on the car.. Why enhance something that is crappy, small and mundane (like stock brakes?) when you can hide it?
Id prefer people to see the big wheels rather than looking past them to something thats had a splash of paint added to a stock item..
*edit: Mohit, dont forget the brakes and calipers in your mock up pics are not that big.. - Halve the size of them..

And thats exactly what i mean about detracting from the rim.
The focus isnt on your rims anymore, its on the overly bright red caliper..

i painted the calipers on the golf red, because the disks are so big and the calipers are so big, the rim raps itself around the brakes. The rad caliper helps seperate it from the rim. and makes them look bigger.
I had the magna's twin pots painted gold. it looked pimp. it helped that the magna had gold pin stripes.

i sprayed them red, cause red cars go fast, so i throught red brakes would stop faster:bowrofl: :bowrofl: :bowrofl:
not really just added that much more to the outer car

i can agree with that. ive got ralliart brakes all round and there large again then stock.

I agree with Bain, leave them alone or paint them a dull colour, if you must. Painting your stock calipers with bright paint just draws attention to your undersized brakes, and screams "ricer". Also I think bright coloured calipers nearly always ruin the look of the car, except for sports cars with stock brembos. And even then, the paint fades to a much duller colour, especially with hard use.

I agree dark gold would suit your car best Mohit - followed by black. I figure that if you are considering gold that you want to show them off a bit - so go for it.
With my Magna, I'm just gonna leave them neat factory silver -(they are stock [ordinary] brakes - so why make a big deal of them - detracting from the nice 18" wheels)
On the other hand - on my project car (a Datsun) I've fitted the full set of Skyline R33 brakes - so they are gonna be full sik RED!
