What's your definition of "a little thirsty" ?
Bear in mind that it's an old car, and fuel economy won't be what it would have been from factory. Also, being a carby engine, it might need to be re-tuned.
Other than that, it might be a matter of easing up on the right foot...

The Astron II has possibly the worst carburettor in the world. You will have no luck getting it rebuilt without spending a lot more than I suspect you want to.
DONT do the things people say, like plugs leads and air filters, they are all probably fine otherwise you would have noticed a big problem.
If you were really keen, I would remove the polution gear from the engine then reset the base timing to the factory mark or max 1 degree further btdc.
From a spare ported vacuum port in the base of the carbi, put a vacuum hose from it to the washer bottle so when on throttle and in vacuum the motor will draw water slowly in to it. This cools the motor and efectivly steam cleans it for free.
There isn't a lot more you can do unfortunatly which is cheap/free.

Yeah, you're probably better off buying a smaller, sh*ttier 4-cyl car just to do deliveries in. One of those little 3-door hatchbacks that runs off the smell of an oily rag...
Save the TR for cruisin'

Yeah, some of those old corollas go hard. Make fun little go-karts too, especially if you know your FWD

The AE86 Corolla's go off, last RWD Corolla ever made...anyone who has ever watched Initial D (Jap Anime Drift show) will know that this car is a bloody status symbol in Japan now. Might also know it as Trueno AE86.
Oh and I found with My Carb Magna that Premium helped and some valve cleaner can get some more K's out of a tank. But yeah, buy a little Corolla/Barina/Excel/some lil s**tbox and use that for deliverys if you can.
As a fellow carby owner, take it from me - ease up on the right foot. It's made 50kms difference a tank for me by not flooring it to 4400 revs in first every time i take off. You might save 3 seconds, but you waste fuel.
Yeah, the carbys are ****. Ideally i want a 32/36 put on, you can get them for a few hundred dollars...as for installation tho?

Initial D is the best man! what stage are you up to? I'm near the end of the 4th, my mate Benno is hell bent on buying a jap-spec 86 and getting it imported from japan:P
