Heya all,
Trying to decide on first mod for the TL, and I'm going with audio.
Should I change the deck or the speakers first?
I'm working with a budget of around $300 for the deck and $200 for the speakers. In the past I've always changed the deck first, but seeing as this is an 03 model car, it already seems relatively flash.
Also, what size speakers do I use to replace factory items?
It looks like the rear already has 6x9s from factory...
Thanks.

I would just save up the $500 and do it all at once. If you replace the headunit you're likely to blow up your stock speakers in no time (if you listen to your music loud of course ;)), if you replace just the speakers you won't get the best sound out of them that you could, but your chances of blowing them is alot less.
You can replace the fronts with 6" or 6.5", rears are 6x9".

What a laugh, I've always replaced the head unit first and never blown any speakers up and my music is always cranking

Personally, the stock speakers ROCK! They're much more powerful than other stock speakers I've heard. With a new deck (Eurovox 5206), I don't plan on ever updating the speakers, just buying subs and an Amp.
Most notably, the stock deck is a Eurovox, so if you manage to get a Eurovox deck to replace the stock one, its just a straight swap cause the connector is the same.

Nice, might grab one of those Eurovox double-din in-dash TV decks
I'm guessing the second slot bit is readily removable with a bit of work. Might leave the speakers stock for now until they go *pop* :D

You're very lucky then, i've seen a few stock systems with a headunit change blow the stock speakers due to listening too loud. When you say "cranking", how high on the Headunit do you go? over 2/3s volume?
Stock speakers = 20wrms, 30w max. Most headunits are around the 25wrms, 50w max per channel. If you crank the aftermarket headunit high enough you will blow them, no doubt about it, as i've said i've seen it happen.
*EDIT*
If you do go ahead and change the headunit, if you're listening to the stereo loudish, don't use things like max bass boost, this is usually the killer for stock speakers that i've seen.

ah no the aftermarket decks are 18watts rms per channel and 50watts max
to the OP, i would recommend getting a new head unit for starters

Sorry you are correct, from what i can see most are around 18-20wrms. You still need to be careful.
I still reckon the OP should just replace both at the same time that way he won't have to worry about blowing anything and will sound alot cleaner.

i hear ya m4ddog (the stock speakers are good, but not great and most ppl replace them cos they want great sound) but if you can only afford/want to do one at a time,
do the deck, then if u feel the stock speakers arent good enough, do the speakers later. when i had my rada i did the deck and subs first. then only replace the rears cos i thrashed them and they couldnt stand upto the thrashing
Yeah I asked this same question a while ago and got told to replace headunit, I just wanted more clarity and apparently the stock speakers are decent enough to deal with a new headunits.

Yeah replace the head unit first, make sure you get a decent one that will complement the rest of your system when you do finally get it updated. A $99 "JB DEAL!" head unit aint really going to be much of an 'upgrade' :P do your research, get something good. I recommend Eclipse and Alpine.
