Hi,

My 91 modem TR Magna one day started to make a creaking/tapping noise from the drivers side as I slow down (especially when braking) or go over speed bumps. If I place one foot flat on the floor as these noises happen I can feel the vibrations of this creaking. I can't work it out. When the car is stationary and I press the brake there is nothing odd, or when I jump up and down on the suspension I don't hear anything odd. When driving near a wall and slowing down I can hear the creaking noise bounce off the wall so it must be external. It does not always happen and sometimes its quiet other times its loud. Any ideas?

Thanks heaps,
Rauli

worn bushes perhaps

Control arm bushes? I replaced them about 16 months ago. Or maybe its loose control arm bolts? I will test them for tightness this weekend.

Thanks,

Have a look at the brake caliper. I recently had a similar noise, and my mechanic found the caliper bolts were loose, causing the caliper to move around and caused unusual noises especially under braking. I had to have new brakes all round and lots of other work on all wheels.

pads might be crap as well. under medium braking the pads slip on the disc making a horrible noise.

I got all the brake pads, new front disc rotors, rear disc rotors machined (front rotors too worn) and brake fluid replaced about 5 weeks ago. cost me $450. Before that, the front right side brake caliper or whatever would clap sometimes when I pressed the brake which I felt was a sticky cylinder but it went away when I got the brakes done.

Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

When I had my brake pads replaced and front rotors machined, rear rotors replaced, my mechanic told me that I would get like a grinding sound and feel for about 200 - 500klms, on the front pads. He said this is normal, as the brake pad is wearing in with the disc rotor. he used a heavier type pad on the front compared to the back.

But if it continued after that amount of driving, to bring it back to have the pads checked, and if necessary replace them at no cost. He told me that sometimes the composition material of the brake pad may not be as even as it should be. The grinding noise and feel lasted about 250klms. All is good in the brake compartment.

i had exactly the same thing as u. turned out to be a combination of worn tie rod ends and lower ball joints. replaced those and the creaking stoped. does it sound like an old door closing? the creak noise that is cos that what mine sounded like.

I can't say it sounded like an "old door closing". It was just the sound of 2 slightly rough surface's rubbing together.

The noise I get is like a knocking/tapping sound (like walking on floor boards in an old house) that has no stable pattern, the creaking/knocking comes out in a random way. Today, I thought I try jumping on the suspension again. There is an odd creaking sound after all from the right side where the sound comes from when I drive but it does not sound the same as it does when in the car. When I jump on the left side there is only the noise of the suspension hissing. I thought bad ball joints made noise all the time but with me the happens when slowing down, going over speed bumps and especially when braking. The noise is sporatic aswell, sometimes is there other times goes away for a while. I will consult a mechanic when I have a day off. Meanwhile I will drive it as little as possible.

Thanks,
Rauli

Hi Rauli

Been here done this.

To check, push the front guard up and down slowly and listen for the noise. If the walking on floor boards happen then ....

1. The inner lower control arm nuts are loose (may be only half or quater of a turn). There are very larges ones and small ones, tighten on both sides of the suspension, noise gone. If the noise continues or comes back, replace the nuts and washers so it has a tighter fit and holds tight.

2. If the nuts prove tight and not an issue replace the front and rear inner control arm bushes.

Yes I tested them for tightness. Can't be made any more tighter no matter how hard I try. I tightened them to specifications when I got all the control arm bushes replaced about 16 months ago.

Thanks,
