View Full Version : Blown another flex pipe

hey ppl
well last night i blew yet another flex pipe, ive lost count on how many have sh*t themselves on my car. Its the one that sits under the sump area from the front exhaust manifold.
what is causing this? i have changed the engine mounts to solid poly mounts and i dont drive the ring out of my car so what has caused this? It is a double braid flex pipe, not sure if you can buy anything stronger or more durable. I'm going to have to get it fixed even though i have RPW race spec extractors on order as i dont know when im due to get these

sorry for the silly question but how do u know if flex pipe is busted?

From other cars I've had the flex pipe only fails if work is done on the exhaust and the flex pipe has to take the strain or the jolts. However if the engine is moved too far when changing mounts then that would do it too.

What are you running up the front now?? Ralliart standards??
How long till you get the RPW extractors?
How are you wrecking them?? do they just deteriorate? if so - what mods have been done to your exhaust system.
I've just about destroyed the flex pipe on my RPW dump pipes - but thats from the car being too low.

As you know Jase, I kept killing mine too..could never work it out. My exhaust shop was prepared to make one with the flex section just a bit longer so it could flex more. They couldn't work out why it was busting either. It's weird.

im gunna say to much movement in Exhaust.. only way it could be happening..:confused:

I thought with mine it was too much engine movement, but we ruled that out with new mounts and visual inspections after giving it hell. The only thing I could think of after that is making some more exhaust hanging mounts...give it some more support.

Yeah and crack the headers....... be better off going with solid engine mounts.

Headers are gay anyway..
Have top fueler style headers comin out of the grille, problem solved..:P
On a serious note.. id be looking at how much movent is in your whole exhaust system..:D

yeah well funny thing is not long ago i cracked the front bank of headers on two of the three pipes. they are so ****ing gay its just a joke
not gonna book it in to get fixed until i speak with old mate dave from the other side of oz and find out when the newies are gonna rock up on my door step. the sooner the better.

No def not paccies.. RPW header from what i know..

He's saying he's replacing his with RPW headers. According to his profile he has Ralliart headers and Pacemakers :nuts:
Surely it's one or the other.

got the stock ralliart headers, but the pacemaker collectors from the 1st flange to the cat. Its all pretty average for my use now so going the new setup
going to attempt a short term fix tomorrow after work with a couple of tin cans over the braid, a bit of maniseal and a truckload of exhaust bandage haha should be interesting

I would say add some additional exhaust hangers or supports, and check your engine mounts. Effectively try to minimize movement of the engine and exhaust. Other than that, if they're still busting, you might need to consider getting a factory system for it. When using a larger-than-stock diameter exhaust, it can cause scraping as it sits lower to the ground. This is especially a problem if you drive over speed humps & etc.

In that case - I'm gonna have to say that is probably the cause of your constant flex pipe problems......... last I checked pacemakers had much longer primaries than the ralliart headers......
Sounds like a pretty good reason not to mix and match headers / y-pipes from different manufacturers.

believe me i know this, was on the car when i bought it and never needed to change it cause i was N/A. Now i have many a reason to get a new setup
