i was down at the wreckers today, wif a mate as he needed a few things. decided to ask them how much a autobox for a te will set me back. he quoted me 350 for a box with 159k on it and there was another one there (still in car) with 129K on it. what should i look for in regards to the condition of the box, if i go ahead and pick one up. also the mechanics quoted me 300 to 350. my box is currently ruff in 2nd 3rd

couldn't hurt to call up some auto places, get a quote for a reco & fit to your car...
odds are it'd still be cheaper than a new box??

Second hand manuals usually work out. Whats the history on second hand auto transmissions?
Most I know recomend a reco auto.

A work mate recently got a Reco Auto for TS V6 Magna supply and fit with 12 months / 40,000 klm warranty (whatever comes first) including reco Torque Converter = $1,850.00 from a reputable (NRMA / MTA accredited) Auto Transmission place in Bankstown (NSW)... so far after 3,000klms he seems very happy with it.

That might give you a bit of a comparison.

Problem with a 2nd hand Auto unless you can drive it to check ... may be no better than yours... KLM's are not the issue it is more to do with regular fluid changes, has it been cooked, has it towed (always check to see if there is / was a tow bar on the car it is coming off... At 130klms or 170klms may be no better than one that's done 250 if they have not been maitained properly...

And remember whilst 2nd hand boxes may come with a warranty it usually does not cover labour so you are still up for removal and replacement....

So $350.00 to buy + $350 to install + $120 for a full service (filters / fluids / gasket) = $820.00 now if it has to come off ... that's another $350.00 so you're at $1,170.00! (plus another $120.00 to service the replacement that's $1,290.00 ...

I guess it all depends on how long you plan on keeping the car, what condtion the rest of it is in and when the last time you felt lucky was!
