Guys.
I am aware that this topic has been covered a lot, and my searches were fruitless, as the search engine rules out "v6" and just searches "swap". Without further ado, I want to transplant a SOHC V6 into my magna, replacing my rattly old POS Astron II 4cyl.
My questions are:
1. How much will the endeavor cost?
2. What is required for the swap?
3. How long will it take to do this?
4. Will I be required to change my vehicle's details at the Transport Office?
Any help would be appreciated... Perhaps if this thread gains enough good information it could be stickied alongside the DOHC thread... I dunno.
Cheers guys.

from what i know it's only one engine mount... if you're going v6 you might as well go DOHC, the sohc really cant compare. I also believe my car would be considerably faster than my SOHC with 5 ppl in it and extra torquey.... Easily worth the extra $
But i believe you may want to contact a hot rodding place as they'd be able to help you out with changing mounts. I dont know if the eng certification for a change of mount is similar to other things in qld but yeah definately call a few first.
I agree, there's no point in spending all that cash on something that you could really just buy-up. If you want a SOHC just sell your car and buy a SOHC and start again. If you want to keep your car for a long time and give it some much needed gusto, DOHC that biatch.
From what I have read in the QLD modification booklet - Read it here (http://web.aanet.com.au/naa/Modification_Jan05v2.pdf) - (from what i can remember) as long as the engine is the same as other engines offered in the models (eg 4G54 and 4G63) you do not need engineering as long as you change over all the other model specific parts (brakes etc) so if you are serious about doing the swap, I'd be grabbing some verada twin-pots and make sure your rears are the same as the V6.
You would have to print a form and fill it in, send it to QLD trans and they will tell you whether the DOHC conversion will need to be engineered - its a funny one because except for 2 extra cams BASICALLY its the same engine, however it was not an option in the Aus magna's so it's here where you'll get some clarification in writing.
For a swap using a DOHC instead of a SOHC you'd probably spend a few G's more with custom extractors and someone installing the loom (which will need to be done anyway) but it would be worth it.
Maybe Gotrice can tell us how much custom work had to be done and how much his conversion roughly cost - you'll get the idea from a V6 to V6 conversion and then you can add some more for a 4 to V6. (Don't forget you may need an upgraded fuel system, lines pump etc) You would also need the V6 gearbox which, i'm not sure will work with the box delivered with a DOHC front-cut.
Hope I helped.

Cheers Gotrice,
How much did your DOHC engine plus installation cost you? My car is my only source of transport so I can only be without it for like a week tops. Where would I source a DOHC engine?
I keep having this thought that getting and installing a DOHC will be rather costly, because I'd really like to spend up to $1000 on the motor and maybe $500 on everything else... which is why the SOHC takes my fancy, that and it ****s all over an Astron II.

Thanks Nick,
Like I said before, I'm a bit conscious on how much this is all going to cost me, however I don't really know how much the DOHC is compared to a SOHC, delivered in front cut form and such. Perhaps Killbilly can give us all a hand.
I'm sure that someone out there must have done a 4cyl - V6 swap.

Exactly right!!
Just go the DOHC conversion, much better bang for buck!!
good luck!

2k$ for my 1/2 cut, tony@justjap.com i think is the email address you need...
1k$ extractors custom
for my wiring to be done and for e6x computer and tune 3k$
I put the engine in myself and as you'll need a v6 gbox anyway installation should be the same for both motors...
and heavy duty clutch... 600$
You could probably get a sohc in for around 2k$ but need to add price for the change of mount...
but for u buy an engine 1k$, v6 gbox 800$:S, i give you my unused dohc ecu cheap, for wiring 500$ if you shop around 1k$ extractors and other costs... 500$ then add the price for a change of mount

Christ that does get expensive. Might as well just buy a new car lol SOHC still tickles my fancy, but I still have to weigh up the pros and cons of the setup I suppose.
It really adds up. Buy a SOHC V6, swap all your goodies over and then sell off your 4. One reason i bought a V6 2nd gen is for the DOHC swap.

might be better to turbo if you want more power. has anyone fixed the tacho prob yet. gotrice does yours work with the haltech??
edit: with the mount intead of moving it couldnt you get a new bit of metal that goes from the mount and bolts on to the gear box made up?

I have also read when this has been discussed in the past that the drive shafts need to be changed aswell because they differ from 4cyl to v6. Then you got the brake upgrades on top of that.
Like most people are already saying. Alot cheaper quicker and less stuffing around to sell you 4cyl second gen and buy a v6 2nd gen if you just want to the SOHC. If you want to go DOHC staying with your current car would be possible but even then it would still be easier to go from v6 sohc > v6 dohc than going from 4cyl > v6 dohc.

Thanks everyone for your input, it seems the general consensus here is to ditch the 4cyl and go up to a 6... if that's the case I may as well just go to another car  Decisions decisions!

i know the sigma turbo exhaust manifold bolts up, and that the astron can take up to 15 psi stock. you should be able to get a turbo for about 1K. injectors should be fine although i dont know if the stock ecu can handle boost?

dont rly need a brake upgrade just greater control... only at the limit of your tyres grip, driveshafts are pretty cheap 2nd hand...
