Hi all,
I own a 2002 TJ Magna Sports and it's time for a transmission fluid change. Problem is I'm not sure if the transmission filter needs changing on the TJ because it costs approx. $184 to replace. I've read that the TE-TF models need changing but don't know if the TJ's are the same.
Also, does anyone know what other recommended fluids are available and how much of the fluid will I need?
Cheers

Fluid: Mitsubishi SP3 - $30 for 5L - Get it from Mitsu Spares Desk
Re Filter: TE/TF/TH have a spin-on filter below the airbox whereas TJ onwards do not, they have an internal filter in the box itself.
I wouldnt bother changing it to be honest.
Any More Q's just ask.

Forgot to mention, youll need between 5-9.5L depending on how effective you are at draining it (Usually you'll be able to drain about 6-7L). So Best to buy 2x5L bottles and youll be fine.

According to Shell Website its 8.4L. I may have been thinking 9.5L which is the Radiator Contents. My Bad.
This is for Autos.
Manual is apparently 2.8L.

How do you know it's time?
Just change the filter aswell.. its called preventative maintenance. You should get another 100,000kms trouble free driving before the next auto service that way; whereas if you only did a fluid change, you'd have to drain the lot in a few thou kms to change the filter anyway.

8.4L is probably a complete fill, you wont be able to drain any more than 4-5L from the transmission and diff.

Gas Hed was right at least someone has been looking at lubrication charts. Is all stated in any Castrol, Shell, Mobil, Pentrite or whatever website.
But if you giving it to a shop to do it make sure you use SP3 by mitsubishi auto trans fluid. let them do a power flush etc. filter is not a must to change.

filter is not a must to change.
So why do we change oil filters then?
Do yourself a favour and change the filter, (providing it hasnt been changed for a while), otherwise you'll pay for it later on down the track.

Something as prone to failure as a mitsubishi gearbox should be well maintained. Give it the service, but the filter isn't really needed unless it isn't the metal mesh type.

What transmission fluid do I use for a Magna TS V6 (1994) Auto and how often should I change the fluid ?

That should be in the handbook.
Mitsu dealers sell the suitable fluid for very cheap, and unless it is a paper filter, dont bother replacing it.

earlier cars had a small spin-on filter sitting atop the auto tranny, next to battery.
If you have a spin-on, makes sense to change it every flush.
For TJ the spin-on is deleted; auto box has an internal filter (strainer?)
but to access it you have to dismantle the gearbox... not necessary.
When I last did it myself I used about 9-10L by flushing it twice.
I bought 3 bottles and have about 1/2 of the last left.
