View Full Version : $2000 trade in - am I being ripped off?

I'm reluctantly trading in my TS for something with more seats. Dealer says he can give me $2000. Am I being ripped off? The car is the following:

1995 TS V6 180,000kms good interior condition, no accidents, good exterior condition. I know it needs new brake pads, and new shocks.

The thing with trade in is, you don't know how much you're getting exactly. Whats the car you're getting, for how much and give us some details about it.

A trick most dealers use is they will mark up their cars by about $2-3k (depending on the car of course), then they'll offer you $3000 for a trade in, and basically get your car for nothing, but you think great i'm getting $3k for my hunk of crap.
If that's pure trade in value (which i doubt) then yes that is good.

Best way to find out what your car is really worth is to haggle down to their lowest price WITHOUT mentioning you have a trade in, and only at the end of the bargaining do you say you have one.

That's good advice - but I've already mentioned the trade in. I'm getting a 2006 tarago. they want 50,000 with a few accessories like rear parking sensors, window tint, roofracks, towbar. So it's 48K including the magna trade in.

Oh, and the magna has LED parkers. Surely they should count? lol

On an 06 model car with a $50k window price you would expect up to $4k off for cash... so don't even bother with the trade...

The $2k is not going to make or break the deal so simply offer them $45k for cash and see what happens... walk away and let them get back to you... there are not a lot of buyers for $50k Taragos at the moment.... so you need to sit tight and benefit.

If you pick it up for $46k and sell your Magna privately for $2.5k you are almost $5k in front!

More importantly ... keep in mind that the current model Tarago is being replaced so you are buying what will be an "obsolete" series ... this is also worth some consideration...

Having done a search on drive.com.au I also think that $50k is on the high side for an 06 Tarago when most delaers pricesd are around $46k-$47k so m4ddog's on the money when he mentions inflated sell prices - on old dealer trick.

Bottom line... sell the TS privately.. even if it is for the same "trade in value" shop around and be prepared to walk away and don't pay any more than $45k oh and if you really want a great people mover buy a brand new Honda Odyssey for the same amount of money and hang on to it for 10 years!

Interesting. Wish I'd talked to you people earlier. Do you think he'd get upset (or change the price) if I said I wanted to retract the trade-in? Come to think of it, I have always been a believer in private sales. Just have to look at some of the dealerships at night with their huge spotlights and sales sharks waiting around. I'll have to see how I can change the deal.

And a quick question woftam66, why can't you hang on to a tarago for 10 years?

Just tell the dealer you've weighed up your options and the deal just doesn't make economic sense. As long as you haven't signed any paper work, you can just walk away. Let them know you've seen same condition taragos for 5k less.

I'm sure the Dealership will come around. They need your business and also need to to move the Tarago. I'm sure you will see something equal to the Tarago that your looking at if you check out other Dealerships.

Paying cash these days drops the price a whole lot, no matter what your buying.

Good Luck, keep us inform.

Mmmm. I've already signed subject to finance. Not my fault if the finance refuses the application.

I've heard of another company called avc or similar that will find the car of your choice and get the cheapest one delivered to your door for approx $300. Anyone used them?

I traded my 1995 KS Xi in 2005 for $3000 when I bought the GTVi AWD (got 14% off).
Yorke sold it to Guerneys sp? and they sold it to Skotty for over $5000.

Even if you've signed "subject to finance" by law a sale contract must have a cooling off period... it varies between 7 and 14 days but it is there enshrined in all the consumer protection legislation.

Put it in writing to the dealer and tell them you've changed your mind.... lost your job.... wife has said no... had a family emrgency overseas and need to travel ... all of the above....at the end of the day even if the finance is approved you need to sign the documents for the finance company to hand over the money!

This is a BIG investment don't go into it unless you are completely happy - simple!

The dealer will try to "force" you to go through with it but remember it's not the dealers money... call their bluff!

The other option is even easier .... tell the dealer you have found someone to buy your car privately and want to go ahead with the deal without a trade in and that $45k would be a fair "cash price".... I'd be surpirsed if they did not settle on $46!

You can keep your Tarago for as long as you want my point was that after year six depreciation usually bottoms out so sellingf any time after that hurts less!

In my opinion Taragos are over pricedand under powered... The Odyssey is a much better people mover, holds its value better and can be had for around $42k drive away NEW! There is also the new Kia Grand Carnival (3.5l) for about the same NEW drive away... both these give you the benefit of much longer new car warranties (5 years / 100k in the case of the Kia) something else to keep in mind...

If you're heart's set on the deal though then just go with it, enjoy and be happy!

Good luck with it all whichever way you go....

you wont get much more than $2000 privately for that car anyway.. thats all its really worth

not true with new cars. it depends on state. in Victoria there is no cooling off period for new cars, unless its an 'off the premises sale'

http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/Internet/Primary/my+car/buying+&+selling+a+car/car+buyer's+tips/buying+a+new+car

in NSW theres a 1 day limited cooling off period on new cars, where the dealer has arranged the finance.

I'm with the others with the price of the tarago.. having worked at a dealership for a few years, they would have paid between 36k and 40k for it. A car of that value generally has a markup of up to 10k. The dealership i worked at had a new daewoo laganza, at the time was $24,990 rrp.. they paid $17,500.. huge markup.
As others have said, I'd sell privately.. always more money, might be more hassles but I reckon you could get up to $4k for the TS. And certainly shop around for the tarago.. remember that they will fight for the deal.. let dealerships battle it out until at the end of the day you have a bargain price. My folks had all mitsu dealerships in SE Qld battling when they bought their Pajero, and managed to save $11k from the first offer.

You're right about the price. about 48K will get a 2007 (I was looking at 2006 at start of post) model. I suppose all I have to lose is a deposit... Will let you all know.

Haha, they sold it to my ex :p we broke up and she's got the car now (oh well cars never the same after a accident)

apperantly when gurneys first for the car they wanted almost $10,000 for it. I think Yourke motors send the car to auction, because my sister other half traded in his VP comm to North Point Toyota, and it endedup at gurneys, and was way over priced.

Ok, I've done the haggling. Got a great price. It all worked out better than I thought. If you haven't ever done so, get a new car. New cars are so much better than old ones! Nothing wrong with the TS though...

Unfortunately it's time to move the magna. 1995 3L TS magna executive... Good condition in Adelaide SA- For sale folder here I come!

Glasses Guide (better than red book) has them listed in 2006 model, dealer trade good cond $31 -$36k with sell price max $48k top of the range, full options, 20k on clock etc.

Problem with new is in 2 years it is worth half as much and 3 year time even less. A people mover may be slightly different

Nah, you missed the point. I just got a tarago. Mine, not selling. Comprehende'?? It's a new car for me!

By upgrade, I mean my previous car... a 1995 TS V6 - and the coloured parkers are supposed to be a selling point.

When you say yes, you'd have to change your username to TUFFTS.

He wants it, but just doesn't know it yet.
