Nah sorry mate.
As far as i know, it's NOT legal to remove an airbag steering wheel from a car that was originally fitted with it.
Welcome to the club.

thanx for the help. i went into motorquipe yesterday and the guy there said that if the car is complianced plated after jan 1st 1996 then any modifications to the inside of the car is illegal including removing airbags but he said because the car is a 1994 model then i shouldnt have any problems but i dont really trust that dude. im in adelaide so ill chack with the local authorities just to make sure. thanks again guys.

Mate, stick with the factory air bagged steering wheel anyway.
A fancy steering wheel ain't worth a smashed up face (or worse) in an accident.

good point. the only reason i ask is i have a nice steeringwheel on my current car (sigma) and i like the feel of it. but yeah is seems more practical to keep the original one on.

i'm in adelaide too, i got defected for tint and steering wheel and my car is 1985.

basically, any steering wheel is no good.

I know that State rules vary, but here is what Qld has to say about it:
"Vehicles that are required to comply with ADR 69/.. or
ADR 73/.. or where originally fitted with a driver airbag
must not be fitted with a replacement steering wheel
without an airbag, unless it is supplied by the vehicle
manufacturer as an option for that model."
Not sure if that means if non-airbag came as an option then you can go for it, or if this is the case, whether you can only install the steering wheel provided by the manufacturer?
An interesting side-note:
"The diameter of any replacement wheel may be up to
25mm smaller than the original wheel but must not
be less than 350mm. "
So virtually EVERY aftermarket wheel is ILLEGAL, as virtually all are 330mm!

you guys ever play with the half of car?
took it around the block once, fistr was pissed.
also pushed it through some doors. all the dents on it were from our rowdy auto class (ie, the massive scratch on the front fender is from a bench grinder :))
