View Full Version : TJ Sports' Platinum 380

I thought I'd start a new thread dedicated to TJ Sports' ongoing adventures with purchasing a new Platinum Edition 380, which was a (branched off) part of the very long "lack of ESC..." thread.
So anything new with that Platinum Edition?
And previously...
yep with the platinum edition the dealer fits the spoiler and accessories so a different spoiler can be ordered. I think its 100 extra for the VRX spoiler and 300 for the lights. but u keep the current set. its also around 300 for the GT door moulds they come already painted. didnt ask abt the head lights but I think its the same deal as the tail lights.
Cool, thanks. I know this is straying from the thread-direction (so I'll make it brief), but I've been considering changing my head+tail lights, and of course need that boot lid thing too.
Next week I'll visit the dealer I got my car from and check those prices.
And hey, good luck with the Platinum... keep us updated.
I checked prices with Spares department of my dealer. They quoted:
VRX Taillights - $230 each
VRX Headlights - $160 each
VRX Bootlid Spoiler - $220
...making it $1060 for the lot. But of course TJ Sports' price estimates were better, basically being charged only for the difference between the VRX bits and the standard stuff already on the Platinum. Hence his quote "but u keep the current set." Wish I could do that too!

lol a thread abt my car buying :bowrofl:
the car has landed at the dealership and its now being decked out with the platinum gear so it could be as early as next week! providing the leasing stuff gets sorted.
I asked that the spoiler not be installed, til I decide which rear end I want. so yeah not much to report really. except maybe I should have got the XR6 lol  2 year lease again? lol
grubco: I think uve got the pricing of the head and tail lights mixed up. plus to fit the tail lights theres a few grommets and nuts required, no more than $5 worth per side.

Yeah well, this sub-thread was getting lost within the other thread, plus I wanted to make more enquiries/comments about the lights, etc, so I figured making a new thread was tidier... especially if you had/have more updates on the Platinum pack.

I agree it looks odd that headlights would be much cheaper than taillights, but that's what the guy wrote down - maybe he got it wrong. I did double check guy that the listed prices were Each, not Pair. But if you have any contrary/better prices, please do tell. I would like the change the lights (if a little cheaper than this).
And good luck with the Platinum!

I think the tail lights are 160ea and the head lights are 230ea. that would sound abt right, but I havn't checked the prices of the head lights but I will ask the next time im down at the dealer. dont forget the spoiler needs painting so factor that in as well.

Yeah you're probably right, though the grand total is still the same (and you must change the rear spoiler too - plus paint it!). Please let me know if you confirm those prices if they come out different.

The handle on the inside of the boot lid? I have that already. I thought it was standard (maybe an extra on my Limited Edition).
As for the lights, you are very lucky if you can upgrade your standards to the VRX ones by paying the extra cost.

The Platinums/SX 380's look the best because they don't have the VRX taillights IMO :P
I do however not mind the boot lip, its just a shame it looks a bit weird when there is one without the other.

Yes I saw that GT. The strip looks okay. On a darker color car it would look better, IMO.
Would be good to know if bolt-on or stick on, so it doesn't dangle off later. (And how much?)
Saw the mudflaps too. They look very short! Still making my mind up on that one...

I hated the VRX tail lights at first; too much white/clear plastic, especially on the sides and on the top. But I'm starting to come around to them... I'm thinking of changing mine (but painting the sides and top to body color).

Yes, standard sits way too high; mine felt like a 4wd after my lowered Magna. And the big rims and lowering really need to be done both together - to look good. Otherwise your 18s will look like 16s.

No probs... was just an idea. If I get serious I'll post in the 4Sale section. (Would consider it if they go cheap, otherwise after market bigger ones would be better)

Isn't that the opposite to revenue raising? As in, you think you're speeding but you're obviously not?
I always thought the Magnas were out by 95kph at indicated 100kph, whilst the Commodore was the closest with 99kph at indicated 100kph?

It could be because VRX and GT run smaller diameter tyres and they forgot to caliberate
the speedo accordingly.

i think its around 440 (inc. 4 wheel alignment) im guessing lovells casue there an rpw dealer. i just said i want it lowered, but i think a drop of 1-1.5" would be good enough cause i have a steep driveway. :( i know theres cheaper but i want to keep the warranty.

problem is theres a massive speed hump going in and out of work, so ill have to check that too. i spoke to veearex his is dropped about 1" which is perfect it looks so good! but when I spoke to the dealer (they use pedders) it was a 1.5 - 2" drop which is a tad much.

Hell man, thats already very close!! I have the same problem with my driveway but mine makes it up but only with going in and out on an angle.

Did you see Veearex's 380, or anybody else that's lowered? But his rims are 20"... What are you going to put on your's? Or are you still thinking about it?
Me too, also thinking about it. But I'm thinking 1" won't be enought to remove/hide that "wheel arch gap". My Magna was lowered 2" are still looked too high, though the headers frequently scraped on driveways, bumps, etc.

Is your driveway that modern type where the "gentle curved" gutter follows the whole street, including driveways? As opposed to the 70's type where driveway section was different the right-angled gutter parts.
If so, my driveway is like that too (and I would have to keep that in mind too).
If after you get it done I wonder if the dealer will put it back to factory height if it doesnt work out for you??

When my Magna was lowered my mechanic said he could return them, on some excuse, but only within a few days if too low. Hopefully your dealer should do it too within a set period.

Yeah, that old style doesn't give you much angle room, especially with nearby parked cars, etc.
Here's a photochop pic of my car with the suspension height and rims I like, on it. (No I didn't do the chop myself). I estimate the suspension is dropped 3 inches and the rims being 20s.
EDIT: Although in this "reduced-to-fit" picture, it is hard to see the before and after of suspension heights.

I'm new here...long time Magna driver, just placed the order for my 380 Platinum today !
VRX Taillights - $230 each
VRX Headlights - $160 each
VRX Bootlid Spoiler - $220
I got quoted:
VRX Taillights - $230 each
VRX Headlights - $320 each
VRX Bootlid Spoiler - $500 painted and fitted
Are the prices on the first page correct ?
I was going to go for the taillights until I realised (the sales rep didnt!) that the Platinum spoiler is different and wouldn't match up.....

cangrats on the car! i owned 3 magnas before the 380, and really wanted an BF MKII XR6 but now the shape of the 380 has really grown on me, sort of like the VE shape. for what ur getting for the price nothing else comes close.
heres what i actually paid for the parts, cause i got the car from the dealer, u should be able to get close:
VRX tail lights 150ea
VRX head lights 200ea
VRX spoiler 200
the platinum spoiler is a dealer fit item, mitsu supplies the cars spoilerless and the dealer paints and fits them. id go back to the dealer and ask them NOT to fit and paint the platinum spoiler, but gwt them to paint and fit the VRX one. the bolt holes are slightly different though. good luck!
plus i got to keep the old parts, and cause i have a spare set of lights im getting the H4 bi xenon hiv conversion kit off ebay. apparently there e marked? so should be street legal.

Hey all,
Can anyone help me out with some quesitons in regard to lowering ?
My 380 doesn't arrive at the dealer for another 2 weeks but I'm thinking of getting them to do the lowering before I pick it up.
Anyone else have a quote from Mitsubishi (I saw one early in the thread at 440...does this include everything?) ?
Is it a good idea ?
How much is too much (1inch, 2inch) ?
Are there any potential drawbacks (ie stress on anything else as it wasn't made to handle it, fuel consumption, etc...) ?
Does this count as a modification that insurance companies are going to hammer me for ? :)
Ignorant questions, I know :D

no such thing as too much... depends on ur driveway or if ur frequently running over speed bumps in ur day to day driving!
no drawbacks really, will wear out the stock shocks a bit more, but it should still be 50,000k's atleast before u have to worry about changing them
insurance wont care :) well, they do if its superlows...if u go just lows, u'll b fine (if they say its a 50mm drop, thats when it affects ur insurance...well, it can do.
improvements include the look of the car (stock car sits too high), and also lowers the centre of gravity, therefore not as much body roll round corners...better handling :) all sportier models of cars will have 'sports suspensions'...iw lowered, sometimes stiffer :)
hope that helps!

What kit did you get? I got a HID kit yesterday in the mail. Mine has Philips ballasts and 4000k globes. Can't wait to put it in :) Btw.... are you going to run your power leads for it along the front and side of the bonnet to go to the battery? I'm hopefully installing mine tomorrow.
Post you pictures up once you've got it in, because I want to see what it looks like :) I'll do the same with mine, but mine will look a bit different because mine have projector low beams.
i got the hid kit in on wednesday and its so bright! i got it mounted using all factory bolt holes, i got a pic of where i put the ballasts up front. it was a bit of a stretch for the cables to get it all neat and factory looking. i got the 6000k kit and it looks just like a merc or beemer comming front on.
plus i got a 380 chromatic mirror from a 380 so the current one from a KJ verada will be for sale soon lol

opps just checked out the clearance this morning. cant work out how the 380 and ralliart have the SAME clearance! oh f$#% what to do now! cant drop more than 1" if that!
Hi did you overcome your ride height and driveway woes yet?
Also, did you put 18s on yet? I'm curious as to what 18s look like on standard springs.
And what about the VRX bits? You mentioned the headlights... did you change the rear lights too?

lol ive had the 18s since day 1, i took that first pic cause the air show was on and i had the camera. went from the air show, pulled into the dealer and picked the car up. drove it home and swapped the wheels. heres a link to pics with 18s http://www.mitsubishiclubaustralia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2057 believe it or not the car has settled abt a cm since then. lol
the rear lights and spoiler were done before i picked up the car. i did the headlights 2 weeks later. i did have the HID kit installed but they were way too bright so i pulled it out again. im getting the lights re-aimed and i might put them back after that.
got to remember where i put the orginal rims cause i did the same thing with the sports, except i forgot i had the rims stored at the back of my parents garage and only rediscovered them about 2 months ago lol i gave the tyres to a mate of mine and thought i gave him the rims too.

Niiiice looking car there TJ sports..... loooooks sooooo hot :) It seriously does. Now that you've got those VR-X headlights and because you've got the GT/LX side door strip it is bascially identical to a GT.
Have you got a pic of the HID lights on at night? I am yet to put my kit in, but mine are 4,300k so my output will be a bit different.

thanks man nar i didnt get a pic of the lights on, but the ballasts and wiring is still in there so i can plug the bulbs back in at any time. i think 4300k would look good, like the calais cause mine are really white, like beemers. it takes a bit of getting use to. my A4 has halogen globes cause it was like a 2000 option
i dont think they suited the 380 cause they got big headlights and they turn into floodlights! where TJs and that have a smaller headlight so they focus the light better. ive noticed a lot of euro cars with HID lights have smaller headlights.

Yeah, very nice pics! Its a good color, looks very good with the grille and bodykit. Your pictures answered my question, that (for me) big wheels need lowered springs. So now I know.
The only non-positive thing I can say about your car is that it could use a lowering, but that's your business... other than that, all very nice! Especially with the changed lights front & back.
