Some third gens seem to have these blocks on the driver's side engine mount and some don't - anyone know why and what they're for?

Looks like a rubbing block for options not fitted to your car.
Or it could be the continum transfunctioner, but they don't normally go there.

It's where they mount the flux capacitor

could be extra mass to damp the component from ringing/vibrating.

I had a look in the Mitsu manual and its there - its called a dynamic damper. Okay sure, so why then is it on some models and not others?

Some models have vibrations from certain components, other do not?

Is it just a rubber block bolted onto the top of the mount?
If so, then how is it supposed to work?

I don't have it on my 2000 TJ wagon:

Temporarily remove it and see if it makes a difference. Never know may be the key to some models that have that vibe on idle....

Its called a mass damper. As said earlier it is used to tune out vibrations. It is designed to vibrate at certain frequencies so as to cancel the opposing vibe. If you have a first gen take off the horn pad and see the size if the mass damper in there! Its a big soft rubber block with a weight on it. When you have the horn pad off hit the steering wheel with your horn and see how much the thing moves!

There just might be something to that - its on a TE and I took it off the TE last night and put it on my TJ. In the traffic this morning coming to work, the TJ did seem to be idling especially smoothly (though please note that my TJ has a pretty smooth idle anyways). Haven't taken the TE anywhere to say if there's a difference to it, but I'll try that tonite.
