View Full Version : Battery change and fuel consumption

Just thought I would share this with you. About 18 months ago I had the battery die on me and replaced with a new one. Previous to this I was regularly getting low 7ltrs/100km on the highway after the fuel consumption increased to 9-10ltrs/100km. Checked out the o2 sensor replaced plugs and leads to no avail. I thought the engine was getting on a bit (180,000) and left it at that. Last week battery died again (crappy battery) put in a new one, idled it for 15-20mins to let ecu settle. Fuel consumption is back to 7ltrs/100kms on the highway. A trip from Sydney to Canberra had me back to 7.4ltrs/100km this was with air on, 115kmph on cruise control and 3 people in the car. When the first battery change was done the car was not left to idle, it was driven off after about 5 minutes. Could the ecu stay out of whack for 18 months?. I notice a lot of threads about increased fuel consumption and wonder if it corresponds with a battery change?

my theory:nuts:
when you idle the car for 15mins it learns to operate the engine at that idle rate, and as you drive it learns your acceleration style etc etc, if your soft footed or do a lot of freeway/highway travel the change between idle to your driving would not have differed greatly, but if the car was not idled for the usual 15min, it would have learnt a higher rev pattern and would have only minorly adjusted down to suit your driving. Even though the it is learning all the time.
When i got my car the auto was changing gears at about 2700 at my rate of acceleration, whilst after my mods its now changing gears at about 3300 at the same rate, so my economy has kinda gon out a bit :(
as i said its my theory, maybe someone can correct me or back me?

Yep thats what it is
My auto box learnt pretty fast i was a nutso driver so she changes at 3300 rpm for me in auto all the time, so i infact get better economy in tippy mode!! WIN WIN i say lol!
the auto does relearn a few things like idle and shift points, but maybe as a side note (i know its simple and obvious) how did you set your trip computer? sedan wagon? 3 or 3.5? maybe something to think about.

Yeah, I can't get over my TL. If I put the foot RIGHT down, it shifts at about 5500rpm!
Not really much need for the tiptronic -- 2nd gear is already 60km/h. Might have to hit some of the straightaways outside Mildura and wind this puppy up (to the State limit, of course!)
