Is it just me or does the iPod's internal amplifier just suck? With the same headphones my laptop can produce much louder and much much clearer sound. I was planning on incorporating my iPod into my car's sound system, but starting to have 2nd thoughts and might go the pc route instead.
It is a Gen 1 Mini (4gb) so maybe the newer models sound better?

Thoughts?

What headphones are u using? A laptop will have more power, but if you are using big headphones then they arent suitable for iPods anyway. And are more suitable for something with a decent preamp.

If you were to use your ipod in your car you would use the line out and an appropriate connector not the headphone socket. The line out will be identical in output strength to any other device.

its true... ipod are teh ****... and not in the good way...

i just joined a gym so i borrowed my gf's new 30G video. the sound quality is terrible, user interface is plain while managing to be complicated, iTunes is THE WORST program i have ever used... and i've used some rubbish, unstable, slow, unnessecarily complicated to use...

i going looking for a creative zen or an iriver

i have a creative zen however wen i started walking 6k a morning i wanted somthing i could just clip on and not have to have pockets so i got one of the new tiny shuffles, i do agree itunes is really bad to use i dont like it at all....i dont use my creative zen anymore due to the fact me and my bf split and he has all the cords and stuff so i cant be bothered trying to get them back.

Using the headphones that came with the ipod, which is why I figured the ipod was the culprit.
Line out, is that using the bottom connector? I have been looking for an alternative but places like strathfield and dick smith tell me they don't exist.
Or is it the little rectangular socket next to the headphone jack socket?

My Ipod video plays perfect sound out my car head unit audio.. aux cable from ipod into head deck... its also perfect with ipod headphones.. perhaps your headphones are just fked . Its when you start using ipod fm tranmittors that you might have probs with quality.

Sounds the same as me.. But older HU. Alpine 9835 with iPod Cable (which connects to the bottom of the iPod, not the headphone jack) gives great sound quality..

What's the connection on the other end of the cable? Is it special for alpine decks only?

I agree there, I own three iPods, no problems with sound quality or anything to that description. This includes a shuffle which I use as a small jukebox for my car, rather than leaving my iPod Photo in there, which is now a bit temperamental from doing so... Sorry Ulcisor! iPod Nano still works a treat too. All of these are used with stock headphones or to my head unit.

You guys should switch to using SD cards with mp3s (need compatible decks of course).

MUCH easier to put songs onto than using iTunes, and a lot less hassle than wiring up an iPod to your deck IMO.

The 'gadget show' tested a an ipod, zen and something else. The ipod came out on top on most of the tests, including sound quality.

When I first got my ipod video, I thought this is bollocks (very tinny and not much basss) as I was using a shuffle before and the cheapo shuffle had vastly better sound. But it came down to the headphones. The shuffles headphones shat all over the ipods. Who knows what apple was doing when they packaged those crappy headphones.

Anywho, using the shuffle headphones and my ears get blasted in all frequencies.

Gotta agree that itunes isnt fantastic. But once u work with it and not against it, and properly organise your songs, its not too bad.

If you guys have an aftermarket HU and want to play your iPod through it have a look at the PAC iPod adapter cables. They make them for Alpine, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer and Sony HUs. I have one so i can play the iPod through my Kenwood HU.

One end of the adpater plugs into the dock connector of the iPod while the other end plugs into the CD stacker input at the rear of the HU. The beauty of the PAC iPod adapter is that it produces CD quality music while letting you control the iPod from the iPod itself. It also charges the iPod via the HU.

ahh yes, this discussion again....

you will need to use the line out down the bottom to get decent sound quality. I have a pair of Shure e2s, and they sound soo much better connected to any other device other than my iPod. If you can get a hold of the 'apple dock connector' you can solder up the audio pins (3 pins) and make your own line out cable. Easiest way is to buy a pre-made one which are usually over-priced. Try ebay or osmething. Easiest solution is to get that belkin one, which should be easy to find, but its bulky and I don't like it.

agree with u there eek.. however, to combat the bulkyness of it.. hardwire it in to ure acc power and stick it behind ure dash.. i did this before i got my pioneer controller..

Yeah I got an identicle cable ( diff brand I think ) from Strathfield for like 50 odd bucks. Its so easy to plug in and use straight away. Also sounds the same as CDs to my ears atleast.

They had a whole section for all the different brand head units, kenwood, sony etc.
