First I would like to say hello to everyone on this great site.I think I have a major problem,I have a 95 magna TS 4 cylinder Auto and the other day my wife went to the shops and she said it went okay but when she came out of the shops it would not start, the key would just make a clicking sound as if it was the battery a couple of people tryed to jump start her but it did not start,I went down got a new battery but that did not help I then went to a auto elec who was next door and he said it was the starter motor so I got him to fix it when it was fixed he tryed to start it but it did not start so he jumped it and it did, so I got in to drive home and while driving home I saw that the oil pressure light was on so I stopped checked my oil but it was fine so I continued home, parked the car at home and did not check it again to the following morning but when I did there was oil everywhere on the driveway opened the bonnet and you could see that the oil had sprayed everywhere and it seemed that it was coming from the front part where the puleys are so I rang the auto elec he came down to make sure he did not hit anything while he done the starter motor he did not and he said it looks like my motor has gone I found that hard to belive as the motor has done only 145,000 and there was no sign before hard except for tappet noise so I rang a mobile mechanic who came down and said it was not my motor but my timing chain had snapped I told him I had the timing chain done at 100,000 and that was about 2 years ago and he said who ever done it the last time did not tighten it properly and it snapped causing a bit of damage to the cover it blew a hole in it and also the stabilizers or something like so he is charging me $1400 to fix it and that includes doing my tappets does this seem right to anyone your help would be great.
Cheers Bob

mmmmmm dosent sound right to me. are u sure it not just a bad leak? have u checked the level of oil and if it's ok tryed to start it? might be timing cover/rocker cover/oil filler cap leak. will it start if theres enough oil in it? make sure there's enough oil in it and try to start it. once u have it going turn it off and let it cool down and then hit it with some degreaser and clean it all up. then get the wife to start it while ur loking for leaks. sounds to me like u have a decent oil leak and maybe a bad elec connection somewhere. also the dizzy plug can get moisture in it and thus rust a little causing the car to not start. happened to me the other week. so off to dick smith for a can of CRC Contact Cleaner, cleaned all the electrical connections in the engine bay, also gave the dizzy plug a light sand and cleaned it too and it started first go. have u see the hole the mech was describing? any more info u have or pic's could help abit aswell. hope thats not too confusing but im sure there's more members here whom have more sdvice to add:cool: also if it snapped then uve more than likely have some bent valves and dinted pistons, now he said that it wasn't tightened properly, well it can't be cause u can't tighten it , that what the hydrulic (bs) tentioners do automaticlly, so plainly he's never done one cause he would know that. the 1st gen's (tm/tp) have a manual adjust for the tentioners but the 2nd gens (tr/ts)had an auto -adjust (self adjusting)if ur to scared to crack open the engine ur self go get a second opinion and try someone who deals with magna's.
oh and welcome to amc

Yes there was enough oil in it but it still did not start.

clean all the connections with crc 12 bucks a can. more so the dodgy dizzy plugg and see if that did the trick. 2 weeks ago mine would'nt start, a member mentioned this and it worked a treat, was very surprizing, also have u checked that u don't have a lose or poorly contacted groud wire? the wiring dosen't seem to be the best in our magna's.

If your timing chain goes, your car will not start. Jump, skip or hop start it is not drivable. And realistically it cannot just snap overnight while sitting in the driveway. There must be some other explanation.

I gota a new wiring harness plug for the dizzy from mitsubishi cost me 20 bucks. not too hard to install just remember the colour sequence of the wires before you remove the old plug from the wiring. I forgot and had to go through 10 combinations to get the correct wires hooked up to the new dizzy plug lol
Thanks,
Rauli

first of all to those who replied, this guy said there was a hole in his timing cover due to the chain etc.. snapping or wearing thru so spraying th dizzy cap with crc wont do ****!
i also have had this happen except mine snapped a guide and then chewed the oil pump cog to pieces coz there was no tension on the chain.
someone said they were quoted $1100 for a timing chain replacement, and you were quoted $1400. well i'd say u got a pretty good quote then considering that this mechanic ur talking about is a mobile one and you also require all new guides and cogs etc which are $175 more than the timing chain kit alone. plus a new timing cover $125, new hydraulic lifters ($12x 8), plus all the extra stuffing around required to clean all the bits of metal and **** outta there, and not to mention the extra time spent to manually reset the timing.
good luck

Thanks for everyones help, I got it fixed for $1400 it was my tension chain that snapped had to get the lifters replaced and also new cover.
There was a few more things that had to be done so all in all I think it was a fair price and now the car is running great.
