Heya,
Has anyone fitted aftermarket speakers in a TL ES before?
I've heard rumours that fronts are 6.5 and rears are 6x9s. Can someone please confirm? (I don't wanna buy speakers then find out I can't use em! ).
Also power rating of stock speakers would be good to know, as an indication of how much more power I should get and if I should bother amping the system or running it off the deck.
Also, a quick guide on what's involved, or link to previous thread discussing same would be great
Thanks.

Not sure if stock fronts are 6 or 6.5, pretty sure they're 6, but either a 6 or a 6.5 will fit fine. The main thing you need to worry about is magnet clearance, if the magnet sits too far back you wont be able to wind your window down fully. I don't know the exact measurement, but look up the magnet depth of Jaycar response splits because they would be about 2mm from the glass. Rears are 6x9.
Stock speakers = 20wrms, 30wmax.
If you need any help with removal of the old speakers, hit me up on msn @ leighm85[at]hotmail.com.
I've done them so many times it's not funny :P.

It looks as though I might be getting speakers and amp first... will want to save up some more dough before putting a better deck in. And considering I will be running an amp, I'm not concerned about the power output on the deck I get.
Might look at some old school Alpine decks

If your gonna buy splits i suggest you buy the tweeter pods from a VR/VRX/Verada instead of mounting the tweeters yourself. The pods go just above the door, where the delta is for the rear view mirrors.

Hmm, after some further review, it would appear that the factory speakers are not the weak link, but the head unit itself.
So I might as well ditch this thread, as I'm now on the hunt for a nice deck. Something in the vicinity of 20WRMS x 4 would be nice...

I left the factory speakers as is and upgraded just the head unit, in my TL. I added a 12" MTX Sledgehammer with a 550 watt (r.ms) U.S.A made SoundStorm amplifier for some extra bass. Funny enough the factory speakers sound good with a sub!

Nice. I do have an Alpine 12" I could drop in, but it is meant to be a family car after all... Think I'll stick with the head unit for now.
How do you guys feel about the treble response from the factory stereo & speakers in 4-speaker (ie. no tweeter) TL models?
It seems to me that the stock head unit does not put out a decent amount of treble, which affects the overall clarity and crispness of the sound......
Hence my first mod would be to replace the head unit before the speakers......

Yeah exactly, which is why I have a replacement head unit firmly in my sights...

I have tweeters in my doors with my TL.

I'll admit to knowing nothing much about car sound systems but it doesn't make sense to me that replacing the radio/cd player would improve the sound of cheap speakers. I'm looking at upgrading the sound in mine so will be interested in how you go. If I can just change one or the other it would be great, but will do both if need be. Posting back your results will be appreciated.

if you upgrade the stock h/u to an aftermarket one you will get better sound out of the speakers
the in-built amp on the aftermarket h/u's have a better output power than the stock units
you will also hear that it will sound different and by different i mean better ;)

Head unit it is.
... er... um... which one ?
The junk mail from Strathfield has lots of pretty pictures, and ooooh, the head units have bright shiny blue lights when you turn them on, motorised faces etc etc and the prices look ok.
Any suggestions for an easy fit into a TL ES Magna Wagon, up to about the $350 mark, needs to have an ipod input, maybe bluetooth ? I am not likely to add sub-woofers(ever) or change speakers if it sounds ok. Are Strathfield ok to install ? Thanks.
I just installed a Pioneer FH-P5000MP double-DIN unit into my TL, and it significantly improved the sound quality.
The rear 6 x 9's in TL's are actually true 2-way speakers, as they have a separate tweeter mounted in the centre of the speaker. Not just a dual cone, but an actual tweeter. Must be a little running change Mitsubishi did, as TJ's had dual cone 6 x 9's in the rear.
So, just with the new head unit, I was able to get a much cleaner, clearer sound ; However, the bass was boomy and undefined, and the highs were still lacking. So I replaced the 6 x 9's with a pair of Blaupunkts (cheap but adequate), and I'm happy with all the sounds coming out of the rear now.
Just looking for replacement speakers for the front, especially to lift the treble response and clean up the bass.
So, to answer your question : Yes, upgrading the head unit WILL clean up the sound significantly, and upgrading the speakers will further improve the sound. Of course, the next step is to wire up an amplifier, and then maybe a sub-woofer (but at my age the last two are superfluous!)......perhaps get the head unit first, and if you're happy with the sound, it's all good and you don't have to spend any more! If you still want better sound, then get the speakers.
I've found that Pioneer head units allow you a lot more flexibility in tuning the sound to suit your tastes. Blaupunkt head units are very ordinary though (in my opinion)

Yeah, I've got a nice double decker in my sights (I LOVE double din decks!) If I end up getting it, I'll post pics of the install...
I wonder, out of curiosity, how much RMS the factory HU puts out?

I have a TL VR, and Ive got Focal 165 V2's in the front The tweeters were to big for the pods on the door you are talking about...

I know this is slightly off-topic, but has anyone tried fitting slim subs under the rear seats? Just a thought...
