View Full Version : Reduced Power on take off

I've been having issues with my car for over 12 mths in regards to reduced power on take off e.g after sitting at lights when I put my foot down, the car "creeps" for about 10 secs before the power kicks in. It has now started doing the same thing after slowing to turn corners.
I've had it into Mitsubishi twice, as well as a couple of mechanics, and noone has any idea what's causing the problem. It's fully serviced, and I run it on normal unleaded. I've tried putting that fuel injector cleaner in, but it makes no difference:confused:
I also notice a fuel smell when I get out of my car, although it's not heaps strong.
has anyone experienced a similar sort of thing???? I've got a bit of travelling to do in the next few months and am worried my car will cark it:shock:
Thanks in advance!

Thanks magna Buff..... I'm pretty clueless when it comes to the technical jargon:confused:
It's had a throttle body clean, new spark plugs, new O rings, and the computer was checked at Mitsubishi. They said some code errors came up and they fixed 'em, but the car still has the problem. Battery has been disconnected numerous times over the past year... I'm at my wits end with the silly thing:cry: Was kinda hoping someone else has had the same prob with their car... it's a 99 Advance, autolol

Sounds like you have an injector that is crook / possibly stuck open. It happens sometimes, so when you sit at idle you basically richen up a cyl, and as you accelerate you burn it off, so your performance increases.

How does the car idle? is it rough?

NQMagnaChick

Yeah, it does idle pretty rough.... the gears are also sluggish at changing e.g. I have to decelerate to get it to go down gears... if that makes sense. Where would I go to get the injectors checked? Thanks heaps:) And if I wanted to get the Diagnostics checked, would I take it to somewhere like DynoTune?

would only suggest a mechanic/workshop you can trust
ask friends and contacts you know well
and only go to a well know automatic workshop for its service

still running rich
and you say have to decelerate to get it to go down gears is significant

changed the auto oil lately - had it serviced ?

does this auto have an economy / power and overdrive functions ?

has to be an electrical or fuel delivery fault

a 99 model how many km on the magna .....shouldnt be that bad

give us feedback if you find a solution ..

Possibly a MAF sensor fault... can anybody else confirm?
Hence why gear changes and air/fuel ratio is up the creek.

Or TPS.
Definately an electrical fault of some sort though.

Thanks everyone for your input.... I'm a typical girl when it comes to cars!!!! lol
I've written all your ideas down and will take them to a Mechanic and hopefully that will be a big help.... so far I haven't been able to give any useful information on what the car is doing:confused:
It's a 9/99 and has just clocked 137000km
I'll keep you posted on how I go. Thanks again!:)

sounds like injectors or maybe a crook fuel pump. taking it to a decent mechanic would be a better shot that mitsu unfortunantly. in my experience they just like to take your money more than help you fix the problem.

i had a similar problem in my old pulsar and it was a crook computer which ended up in the car stopping all together. that was a $600 fix that involved the new computer and injector clean.

you said that mitsu cleaned up the codes on the computer as well. if you have a receipt lying around see if they noted them and chuck them up in here. there are some pretty clued up guys that should be able to help weed out your problem.

Was just giving my car a long overdue cleanout, and found a little plug thingo that says
A.E.B Injector Emulator.... this has obviously been disconnected by some well meaning fella at either RACQ or Ultratune when the car first started playing up. Should this be put back in????
Found my receipt from Pickerings (who are as handy as a pocket in a pair of underpants)
Quote: Inspected and found fault codes in system
Air Temp Sensor
Found AFS as poor connection:confused:
Cleaned terminal and tested, all ok.

Couldn't locate the actual fault codes on my receipt though:cry:

Also, was wondering if any of the townsville people have LPG... mine's not working and I don't know were to take it for a service..... Thanks in advance:D

I have the same problem its sluggish to take off then kicks in randomly after a few seconds tends to happpen more when im stopped on an upwards slope thinking it might be my fuel pump but it doesnt happen regularly enough to show my mechanic very frustrating. Its definatly not my TPS cause i had a problem before and it was believed the TPS was the culprite they diagnosed it and it was fine turned out to be my distributer packing it in.

Yeah, I hear ya! So far I've got a list of 7 possibilities from the wonderful people here, to take to my mechanic. I'll post back afterwards so keep checking, it might help with your prob:)

Im almost too embarrassed to say this but my mechanic cleaned out my throttle body and it seems to have fixed the problem. It might come back and it might be a placebo affect but it seems to have worked so far. Irony of it all is i bought some throttle body cleaner but never got round to using it...

Unfortunately, my throttle body was also cleaned out during the last service, and it made no difference:cry: Hopefully yours is all good now:)

Ive been having this problem for a while now too. Ive had the dizzy cap changed, spark plugs changed, dizzy leads changed and so far no difference. It does have periods where its not 'so' bad but generally its up sh*t creek all the time.

The magna prefers it if I drive in high revs, mainly keeping it out of the 1000-2000rpm zone but if I give it a bit more anywhere else in the rev range it just sh*ts itself again.
