Hi I'm new here and just got my hands on a neat TJ magna. I hate the standard ride height and want to know the best lowering springs to chuck in so it sits a bit better on the road. I don't want it super-low been there and got sick of getting stuck on speed humps. Also a rough guide as to the cost would be appreciated. I'd be doing all the work on the car myself.

lovells and kings are the popular choices. I have kings lows approx 30mm. shouldn't pay more than $100max a pair. make sure you seat them in properly on the fronts or you will get clunking noise.

kings or lovells are good and popular
most people get lows
if you want to put superlows on the front thats ok too but you will get a fair bit of scraping
on a slighty related note
a better sway bar on the rear helps alot with the suspension so ive been reading
Go for regular kings all around (not superlows in the front), or king SPs if you're worried about being technically legal. Ride quality is barely different, but the body roll is reduced a lot. Get a rear sway bar if you want to eliminate more of that.
Edit : rough guide of the cost, i got the springs for $210.

hey do u think if u...... lowered your car without telling insurance that they would know if u happened to be in an accident?

Thanks for all the fast responses, it's made my decision a lot easier. I think I'll go with the kings lows, superlows sounds like a bit of trouble as I want to avoid scraping. My main concern is the annoying bodyroll and just that huge gap in the wheel arches. Thanks again. :)

If you totalled it in suspicious circumstances, they'd do all sorts of stuff like check the spring rates to see if they were stock etc. Kings are painted yellow with the part number on them but you could get that off, but you can't change spring rate/length of the spring. If it was just a fender bender they wont bother, but if you wrote the car off they'll do all they can to make sure they legally have to give you a payout before they part with 15k. If you won't get a huge payout when you need one why have insurance in the first place?
To the OP, kings will lower it nicely without any scraping issues, if they dont reduce the body roll enough get an adjustable sway bar for the rear.

I'm thinking of doing this also, do I need to change both the shocks and the springs? Or just the springs?
EDIT: With 18" wheels fitted, would you recommend King low's or superlow's?

Order my kings lows yesterday at Autobarn, should be in tomorrow. Now I just have to find someone in Bendigo that will lend me their spring compressors.

I wouldn't go superlows, even autobarn said I could have some trouble with rubbing. I'm happy with anything that looks better than standard.
No you don't need to change the shocks. It will handle better if you get shocks to suit but it's not required.

Autobarn is stupid. They know cars in general not specifically. Have a look at AndrewD's car. 20" rims and the wheels are under the guards.. I have 19"s on SuperLows... No rubbing.

What about when you hit bumps at speed? Plus I have to occasionally tackle steep driveways.

Not only that the superlows weren't designed to go with lows, read the king springs catalogue even. Coming into my driveway in newy I have about 1cm clearance from my towhooks, thats only lowered 30mm, but admitedly it's a bull**** steep driveway. At home I have about an inch, it's still up hill driveway but nothing crazy, although a friend can't get his magna up with lovell superlows.

i have lovells superlows with 18'' rims guys. i get no rubbing from the wheels, dont get stuck on speed humps and my ride is still smooth even with the stock shocks. i have a tj vrx so the kit on it.... its a magna, they dont sit really low unless u compress the springs and still, the kits on magnas arent low hanging. (maybe a ralliart front bar or custom front bar sit really low)
but really i cant see u having any problems or getting stuck on a speed hump....

19's on Superlows here, no rubbing even at full lock.
I havent scraped yet and Ive even got the stupid pacemakers poking their head out the bottom like they do.
SuperLows = Front
Lows = Back
Looks porn.

Ross, I take it Autobarn Bendigo ordered your lowered springs?
If so, how much?
EDIT: Nevermind, just saw the price, also, did you get a time frame/availability on the lows/superlows?

It takes close to a week to get the springs in. I ordered mine wednesday and they should be here tuesday next week. They're out of stock in melbourne so they had to order from QLD.
I'll post a finaly price once I pick them up.

I have King lows all round and i'm not happy with it.
Its getting superlows next week because honestly a 30mm drop is not much compared to the 4wd state magnas are in stock!
imho you probably will be like "gee is that all it dropped?" when you get lows.

I can see your point, but I just want it to handle a bit better and reduce that huge gap, not after a superlow look. I'll be putting a spoiler on it next and some mags. Just a few mods so I'm comfortable with it. Later on I'll be going back to a sports car, then I'll worry about how low it looks :)

i think ill get superlows or lows all around, i dotn want a combo, BUT
do i have to get my rims before this is done?
im only looking to get some 17's, maybe maybeee some 18's but that is doubtful..

Lows is the way to go. Makes a Magna/Verada look smart.
They should have come out with the low setting from the factory.
You loose a little comfort but not to much. Superlows look great but the trade off start to happen such as a firmer ride and the misses ripping the undertray plastic off on a regular basis.
Good choise with the kings. Good spring.

if you up size wheel size you need to get lower springs, if you just get the usuall lows and upgrade 2-3" wheels you'll be like, is my car even lowered?
I've got superlows all round and the front compressed an extra inch, i have no scrapping, just the front bump stops are bangin, need to get that sorted out n it'll be fine, my car sits about 95mm from the ground under no load, and i have only scrapped my exhaust tip ever so slightly because of those stupid drive ways where they are narrow and have the guttering come all the way up, so you can't go sideways :doubt:
lows are the way to go if you just wanting better handling, but if looks pay any role you will end up with hardly any difference in arch gap when you upgrade your wheels.

So King SuperLow's are the go if you want 18" wheels?
Is that the general consensus?

I'm going pedders superlows... Not sure if there is any difference from kings/lovells ect but i currently have king lows so lets hope its another significant drop!
Oh also going for 19" rims this time round so it might not sit any lower to the ground, but should be less gap in the guard!

get lovells superlows on front and just lows in rear for 18's it will drop it nicely, not as much as kings (10-15mm) but you'll be more comfy than kings, kings aint that great on comfort, most ppl i know with kings never want to get them again. nearly every store has em so they are hard to avoid.
What about getting Pedders Spring all round if you don't want them sit that low? Coz my experience putting kings all round will drop after a year or so.

Who does everybody say to go superlow @ front and just lows @ rear?
I have lows all round and the rear is slighly higher, so why would anyone want to put superlows in the front and have the car looking like a door wedge?
I dunno might just be me lol

I hope its just because it`s not possible to get King superlow rears due to the fact they were not captive at full extension,But i have to agree, the front down bum up look looks very odd to me and went out with the hotrods IMO,It also can`t be good for handling ,weight transfer etc.
Put some lovell lows all round mate with some kyb`s or something similar and you will be happy as larry
Steve
For those that say 'wedge'...have you seriously looked at a car with super low fronts and low rears?
I have superlow front and low rear....could someone PLEASE tell me how my car looks like a wedge?? (see pic)
As for handling, if you want absolute optimum handling, get adjustable shocks on all corners and sway bars. Otherwise I would be very surprised if you could tell the difference in handling between lows and super lows with normal to semi spirited driving.
For clearance, I have 100mm clearance all around. I very rarely scrape when other cars don't. With any lowered car you should be a bit careful as common sense must prevail. The only time I groan when scraping is when parking into a gutter/cement stop.
For my 2c if you want to get rid of the 4wd look and improve handling, superlow front and low rear. If you want improved handling and don't mind a slight 4wd look, lows all around. If you want track or very spirited driving, invest in adjustables and tweak to your hearts content.
Oh and KYB shocks for the win. Some say Monroe GT are too firm.

dont wanna hijack but instead of making another thread i thought i'd come in here.
i am getting my 98 rada lowered because it looks like it's constantly trying to do wheel stands with the standard stuff. i have $1000 to play with for springs, shocks and possibly a sway bar. the $1000 includes install too. i am thinking KYB's and kings superlows. not sure on swaybars though.....
any help would be really appreciated.
after reading anon's post i am leaning more towards superlows. i live in melbourne by the way, just in case anyone has a recommended place to go through for all this stuff.

well measure the height of the lowest point of ur car, s/lows will drop that about 50mm, and lows will drop it about 25mm, just go round ur car with a tape measure ;)

I'm also considering lowering for my TJ Sports, its already dropped 30mm front and rear and i want to get it down a bit lower, around the 50mm - 60mm mark. I just got a quote back from pedders and they have told me that the only way it can be done is modify (shorten) the length of my shocks and re-set my existing lowered springs. they will also need the car for a full 2 days and they will happily sting me $890. needless to say, i think thats a little steep......

For peddars that's actually surprisingly cheap!
It shouldn't take 2 days, they must just be backlogged with work or something. Many people on here have kings superlows on the front (60mm drop) and lows on the back (45mm drop) and haven't had any major issues that i am aware of.

Agreed it looks wedgey there. But my thinking is that the wedge look has more to do with the actual shape of the magna, the high contrasting colours (white stands out in the pic) and no colour coding on the bottom plastic.
My pic was on dead flat ground, albeit dirt.
