Hi,
Could anyone please point me in the correct direction as to what I should do to get more power out of a 3L V6. I have to replace the engine in my car and have got a great deal for a brand new 3liter long motor to fit straight in my TE but I want more power out of the standard engine. I want to know what modifications I can do to it while it’s out of the car and new.
Someone please help!! :bowrofl:

didn't you read the $2K budget post? not everyone gets special mates rates like you :P
> Heavy Duty Compensators

Suppose I should try and be helpful too...
you could get an exchange set of flowed heads for about $1400
or
you could get some mild cams ($1100) and adjustable cam gears ($280)
or
you could buy a piggy-back and get a tune ($1300-1700)
problem is, if you do anything too extreme you'll need a piggy-back to make the most of it and that on its own nearly blows your budget :(

10hp peak increase.. should get more torque everywhere though so real-world it'll feel quicker than 10hp would suggest.

I got 5kw ATW out of a normal tune with stock engine with the haltech..:)

If its just the ECU i dont think you can expect all that much, be careful though cause tuning costs about $400 a hit, thats if you tune after every mod to get the most out of it. I got my chip sitting in my cupboard, need some small mods first before i put it in.
Maybe 10-15hp:P at the flywheel, honestly not too sure

So I have a feeling this is going to be a progressive engine upgrade! So what should I do to the engine now whilst it’s out and then maybe the bolt one mods later?

Well id say leave it out and keep it as a project engine, keep doing things to it when money is spare.

There aren't really any bolt on mods you can do later when it comes to engine internals. Ideally while the engine is out you'd do all the fun bits that I, or Jason, have done - it's the sort of thing you tend to do all at once, and there are bits you can't do without doing others..
like if you put some big cams in it, your ecu won't drive it so you'll need a piggy back or full replacement ecu. same with high comp pistons.

K so ECU is a definite I know there is a million different things’ you can do to a car but what would be the most beneficial.

If you are paying $400 for a tune everytime you do a minor mod you are being taken for a major ride. An initial tune might cost $400 but a good tuner that knows the car should be able to make "adjustments" with less than an hours worth of dyno time.

Nothing you can do to your bottom end for under 2K is going to make the car more powerful..... it will just make it more capable of handling big horsepower.
Which is why it is a good idea to build an engine from the bottom up if you know you are building it for high power, but most people don't plan that well and just do ad-hoc performance mods until they get to a point where they can't go any further without strengthening the engine.
Anyway.... with a 2K budget, and considering your profile says your car is an auto...... I wouldn't be looking at the engine..... if you know what I mean

Suppose I dont want crazy power just not slugish like it is now. Especially when i have a car load of people and considering that i have heaps of audio and sound dedding installed. any suggestions?

BlackBeard makes a good point.. spending $2K on a manual conversion will make your car feel a lot more powerful that it does now.

back to ecu and power gains my 2.6 got 16hp atfw from ecu upgrade....
thats a fair bit.
i'd suggest he spends it on computer personally as it will give gains and forms the base of all future mods. You can also take it out if u sell the car and use it in ur next one no matter what it is!

As others have siad for 2K, I'd also be goign for the manual conversion.

Absolutly manual. It makes the thing go like a rocket. Unlike holdens and fords, the 6G72 is better suited with a 5sp manual. Get a manual-box, you'll be surprised how much better it feels over a auto, even with the rest of the car stock.
