Does anyone have air conditioning in a 1st Gen that is actually cold and can cope with summer weather?

I've had three 1st Gens. First was a TN bought new in 1987. The air cond was Ok in winter but could never cope with summer. I had it re-gassed a couple of times but could never tell the difference afterwards - it was still inadequate.

Second was TP wagon bought 2nd hand. The air-cond was useless, so I had it re-gassed. They converted it to ozone-friendly gas and replaced all seals etc. It was then reasonable for a while but still couldn't cope on a hot day. Now you can barely tell whether it is on or not.

My TP sedan is even worse. It is not even sufficient on a 25 degree day, let alone the 40 degrees we get in summer.

So, do I just have bad luck or does everyone else have the same experience? Are the elites any better with their climate control sytems? (Can't see how they could be as I assume they use the same compressor??)

when i took my motor out, we tried to keep the aircon intact... didn't work cos one of the hoses was leaky.

i fitted climate control in, replaced the hose + R/D and got it regassed with R12. also chnaged the adjustment on the front of the Auto Air Controller, the compressor cycles more. yet to have it freeze up.

but yes, the my a/c is pretty good. i found that my mums hyundai excel has a better airconditioner.

I'll get mine (TP) re-gassed, but only because it's the last remaining thing that doesn't work in the vehicle...

If we *really* want aircon, we have a split system in the Tarago ;-) But generally, I just use the aircon winders/buttons attached to each door :p

As a bike person, I'm really not into the decreased acceleration which occurs when using the aircon in a car at any rate. Cars are slow enough off the mark as it is.

Cheers,
Mattt.

The aircon in my wagon is unreal, copes really well in the Qld heat. It still is the way it came from the factory, it has never been serviced in its life. The only fault was the compressor clutch failing, replaced it and was back in action.

All the 1st gen Magna that I had ( 2 '85 TM 's 2 ' 90 TP's) the air con were also really cold in summer.

There seems to be a wide variance. I wonder what is responsible for the difference. Since re-gassing doesn't always help, I suspect that some compressors may be better than others.

My other car is a L3004WD and i had it converted to 134a gas and ever since it hasnt been as cold as it was when running R12 gas. I have spent nearly$2000 in about 5 years repairing it. Gone through 3 rebuilt compressors , a couple of tx valves and new condenser and numerous regases.Fitted a brand new compressor and it has lasted 2 1/2 years but it still struggles on hot days and it has been checked by numerous so called a/c specialists. Most say older systems cant cope with the higher pressure of the 134a gas.

nar its all the same system they only main difference is the electrical side
as for my ac its good, keeps me more then happy and from what i can tell its still factory gas

what you can do is play with the thermostat if your willing to risk it, there is a tiny screw on the module, pre set from factory is from what i can remember 4degrees off, 5degrees + on, changing that screw changes that value. But be sure to monitor it because if your ac system is running right putting that value lower can cause (as BCX7) the evaporator to freeze up

Interesting about the adjustment... I might check that out. Mine is still stock, and although I wouldn't say it doesn't work well, I think most the cause is the fact that the speed of the engine isn't sufficient at idle at least to make it run cool. I find after I've been driving above 80k for a while, it gets really cold, so much that I actually turn the aircon off so I can feel my hands again! Going at 60k or below though, I would say the temperature is only slightly below average.
