i just got a new HU put it, its a kenwood one, cant tell u the exact model, it was priced at 425 and i got it for 350....its got three pre outs and all this other stuff, and so far i rate it highly, anyway, my stock speakers are on thier way out and i was wondering,

should i just put a new pair of 6x9's in hte back with sum new front 6's, or put 6's in the front 6.5's in the back and get a sub, but that also means a amp...

so if someone could maybe let me kno what they are running etc...

i am leanin towards the sub combo tho...

:) thank yooooooou

Depends on how much you want to spend mate

Me personally i have the following

HU DVD (DUH)
6x9 in the rear (the holes are allready cut in the parcel shelf for the 6x9's as thats whats in your car atm)
6.5 splits in the front
2x 12" subs
and a 5 channel amp to run it all

it's all about $$$ mate, if i was in your position and had say 1 - 1.5k to spend then do the whole lot

Cheers

Heath

what sort of speakers do you have in mind?? Everyone has diff taste on this subject me im alpine, You can get some pretty decent ones these days for a good price. Perhaps replace all your speakers (just hooking them up to the HU) buy a amp and sub combo as you were saying, and later on down the track purchase another amp and run all your speakers off that new amp when funds allow.

Hi mate!

Firstly, your budget and type of music!!! Very hard to recommend anything till we know that.

Some suggestions though for a system setup:

Fronts: 6.5" or 6" splits running off an amp

Rear: 6" or 5.25" coaxials running off the headunit

Sub: 10" or 12" (I prefer a quality 12" but its personal taste) running off an amp.

Box for Sub: Depends on what music you listen to. I like a sealed box as I believe it helps produce more accurate note, rather than a boom.

Amp: Depends on your budget. Would be great if you could get a 4 channel amp for your fronts and rears, and a monoblock for your sub, but not many people can afford this. So the other option is to get a 2 channel for the front splits and a small monoblock for the sub OR get a 4 channel, power the front splits of 2 channels and the sub off the other 2.

Cheers

mmm that is actaully a greatt idea.... i was thinking i would have to buy two amps one for sub and one for speakers, but i have to say hte HU is pretty high powered and even makes my stockies sound nice....yeah i recon i will replace all the speaker, probs alpine/pioner (maybe maybe maybeeee soundsteam, my mate can get sum good deals) and then get the sub-amp combo :) wiked.... u got a pik of your layout or anything?

btw sorry about the typing, ive got a wireless keyboard and it constantly looses range...

Ok does that budget of $800 include your new headunit?

If it doesn't, I would get the following:

Splits for the front: $300. Hertz, Morel, Focal, Boston all make some nice splits around this price. Best person to talk to here would be Marty from FHRX Studios (member of this forum).

10" sub: Response 10" Carbon Fibre DVC ( CS2278) $180. This is if you make your own box. Can get a prefab box for under $100 (i.e. Jaycar CS2533 $50, would be all you need in your budget).

4 channel amp: Response 4x100Wrms (AA0426) $300

Dont worry about rear speakers for now, just leave the stock ones in for rear fill (i basically have mine faded totally out) and spend the money where it matters most, up front where YOU sit! That brings it to about $830 including the box for the sub.

Hope that helps!
Cheers

This is the best I can do as far as pics go. Its pretty much up to date, but I havent done the boot install yet, its all just sitting in there :P It might help you a bit as it goes through a lot of questions I had in the process.

Um why would you put 6x9's in with a sub? IMO that kinda defeats the whole purpose, subs are for bass, 6x9's are to ill in lack of bass without sub...

do a search.... look in the threads above this one.... but for reference 6.5" splits up front, 4 channel amp and a 12 sub, bridge rear channels to run the sub and run the fronts of the other 2 channels..... give us a budget, will help us out bit more on what we can reccomend :)

ponly around 800$ish.....i already got a HU

For $800, i'd get 6.5" splits up front, 4ch amp, and sub. bridge two rear channels to the sub, have the other two chans for front. fade out rears too about 50% and dont buy new ones.
You'll have a much better sounding system rather than trying to afford rears aswell.

yeh mate... 800 hundred id go 6.5 splits, 4 channel amp and 12" sub..... will you be installing this yourself? if not factor in installation, and also a decent wiring kit

splits- $250
amp- $250
sub- $200
wiring- $100

thats if your doing the install yourself... look into the jaycar range on that budget, or go check out the CAA for sale section for some great bargains

alsoo on my deck i can choose my speakers individually and set the treble levels n bass levels, so ill jus turn the bass down to -4 or something and fade them out a bit....thats should be ok, but yeah i get wher u are coming from as 6x9's are meant to be there if u dont have a sub to provide a bitta bass....but eh.. ill c how i go

i know you already know this but if your getting a sub you dont need 6x9's
you only get 6x9's if you dont want a sub or havent got enough room to install a sub
the rear speakers dont have to be too flash any way as they are only rear fill
as already said all you need is:
6 1/2" splits
4ch amp
10/12" sub in a box
amp wiring kit
either had a go at installing it yourself or ask someone on the forums if they can give you a hand

At the moment im building an alright system IMO, alpine :D good stuff without uber price, I'm gettin type R splits probaly next pay day, for rear fill i have type S coaxils but i am yet to know wat sub i want, i may be sticking alpine or goin for polk/soundstream.... but yeah my little input on splits would be go Type R's, $280 isnt too bad but if you want a lower price Type S for $230ish.

Dont mind you asking at all :), as most good car audio places say "Its really up to how you hear it" meaning they dont say these speakers are great, they say have a listen and see wat you thinks great. For me i had a bit of a shock when the guy goes "the splits sound a fair bit dif" after hearing the type r and s coaxils, i heard a smallest amount of differecne which was not worth $50, but when it came to the splits i found the sound more crisp and to my liking, after comparing to the type S splits.

The other difference is they handle more wattage and thus louder, and i dono about everyone else but i do like some loud music from time to time :D.

Now im unsure with subs so for now im looking around, been told type R's take a while to break in but after they have they hammer insane, but again price wise to the type S may now be worth it, will let you know once i have tested both (Probaly tomorrow) anyways thats my 2c, and alot of typing lol.

like any splits, they will sound diff from the sound board to ur car, definitely dont audition splits in jb hifi or something, u want a quiet store to atleast hear the difference, rather than hearing the difference at 3/4 full volume coz thats wats needed to get the music above the ambient volumes :)

just some advice :)

Lucid-_-Magna
20-03-2007, 03:35 PM
Good advice, yeah go to a specialist store (Elite is my friend) the people generaly know more what there talking about and dont just try and sell you the flava of the month. JB will try and sell you what they get cheapest.

Spackbace
20-03-2007, 04:12 PM
well, if its alpine, u can audition at one place, get their best price, then go to places like jb hifi and see if its any cheaper :) same speakers at the end of the day...

just when u get to more high end products, shopping around gets difficult, but alpine/pioneer are easy to have dealers fight for ur money :)

Hahaha which raises me to another jb/elite moment :P walked into elite asked them how much for a set of type r splits, they say $300, walk into Jb they say $350, i go "oh mk" they ask how much i seen them for after saying 300 they go alright 280... good old jb :D

I cant live without my 6x9's and I have Splits up front and Two 12's Ported in the Boot..

The 6x9's Play the Frequncies the 6.5's Can't go down to and the 12" take over where the 6x9's roll off..
