I thought to stay legal with 18's you had to have 235/40 not 245/40. I think you'll find the speedo will be out by an illegal amount.

245/40/18 is the right size when going up from 225/50/17 as it keeps the overall
diameter the same within 4 mil a 235/40/18 is to not tall enough

That's not what I was told. I think 245 tires are dearer anyway, and may cause some rubbing?

Yeah but is a very uncommon tire so will cost you more $. Best bet is a 235/40x18. Pick up MAXXIS MA-Z1 tires on said profile for around $230 per corner.

maxxis are cheap and made in taiwan . according to njoy fitment manual and costar fitment
guide 245/40/18 is the correct size to have as the overall diameter is the same as the standard
225/50/17 and wont change the speedo . if you were changing from 235/45/17 you would use
a 235/40/18

MAXXIS are a great tyre, read any tyre comparison test. They come in above a lot of others twice their price in all aspects. When I upgraded my tyres I had the standard 225/50x17 and was told by Bob Jane to fit 235/40x18 when I got my new rims. It's cheaper for tyres and the overall rolling diameter is not out by an illegal amount. I think the speedo difference at 110km/h is about 2km/h.

But hey, that's just me. Knock yerself out.

i work for a tyre wholesaler and my boyfriend manages a tyre store and has been in the tyre industry for 13 yrs in wholesale and retail . the reason bob jane recommend maxxis is because they import them as do sprinter tyres therefore the store gets a rebate for selling them
where as the tyres on my car are the oe fitment on 5 series bmw zero road noise and awsome traction wet or dry and due to the nature of runflat tyres having a stiff sidewall they corner better as they dont have as much tyre roll . as for wheels they are a 35 offset and sit
perfectly . if i was to use another tyre it would be michelin pilot sport 2 in the same size .

Run flat tyres are notoriously noisy and rough as guts. The comparison I was referring to was in one of the Wheels or Motor mags a while back where they tested a whole heap of different tyres and the MAXXIS tyres came in 3rd place behind a couple of big names, and also came infront of a lot more expensive tyres, so I don't think either of those magazines are getting kick backs from MAXXIS too are they?

Your BF may manage a tyre store, but at the end of the day whatever he says is just his opinion anyway and what's to say he doesn't get kick backs from said manufactures for telling you and others the tyre he recommends is the best? Same goes for you yourself really, it's all personal opinion. I base my choice on actual tests done by magazines and results I can see on paper, not something someone told me. You probably get better tyres cheap so I'm happy for you to be able to afford them, but for the rest of us we have to make do with paying retail or near enough to.

At the end of the day I'm happy with my choice and don't need to be pretentious about it. :)

You're probably right. It's highly likely he lies to his partner about tyres, the latest trend in relationships.

235/45x18 is the same rolling diameter as the stock Ralliart tyre 225/55x17

Stock ralliart, or any 17" wheeld Magnas have 225/50R17 tyres giving OD of 656.8mm.
245/40R18 give OD of 653.2mm. 235/45R18 gives OD of 668.7mm which is way too big and
45 profile 18" tyres are expensive. 235/40R18 would be too small with OD of 645.2mm.
