I did this mod on the weekend and took a few photos, so I'd thought i would post it up incase someone else wants to try it. I am unsure if the earlier tippys are the same but in my TJ sports the lamps on the shifter are not bulbs...some wierd glow strips. I tried painting them red but that looked crap, so this is what I did. I noticed a TE at the wreckers had a different light globe to mine but still had the same electrical socket that could plug into mine. I got another globe with socket and wire as to use one for each side.

1. Remove shifter knob by unclipping plastic shift cap(the bit you push down)and undo the the nut.(tube socket).
2. Remove center console parts and unscrew the "base plate" of the shifter. Has 4 very small screws and they can be lost easily:redface:
3. Mark on the base plate where the PRND and +- are.see (pic1) and cut out this area to allow light thru. To remove these indicators there is a little metal circlip underneath. You can pull the wires away from the glow plates and seperate the indicators.(pic2) I then super glued these back into place.
4. Connect a couple of extension wires to the globe with the connector allowing a plug connector at the end and same on the second globe wires i.e male female connectors.
5. Put desired coloured covers on bulbs (i used three on each to show red) and zip tie into place as to not impede shifter etc. The bulb on the right hand side is permenantly zip tied to the base plate(pic3)by drilling two holes to allow zip tie to pas thru.
6. If desired to allow more light thru you can drill a hole thru the centre slide piece on the right hand side(pic 4).NOTE: when you have the shifter in the Sports mode gate you can see this hole, which is no biggy but some may not like it.
&. Plug in wiring and test. Reassemble centre console and your'e done.(pic 5).

I know the photos are not the greatest but you get the idea. It ties in alot better with my interior now, especially at night(see avatar)

the two bulbs in the centre console and three under the trip meter and the lamps in the footwell all havethe same bulb covers on them as shown in the abouve pics. The brightness comes from the macro setting on my camera, but cant hold it still enough for the length of time it takes to get the photo(blury)this is what it is like normally
