with 244,000ks on the clock in a tr 4 cyl, would it be worth doing an electronic tune? the ones that they offer during the upper (off basic) services at some places. i just really want an idea what its for, what changes it makes and whether or not it will affect the fuel to air ratio and make the car run smoother. any details would be appreciated,
thanks
Alex

Find a good Auto Electrician with a MUTII tool (all decent ones have them) and book it in.

Is it an EFI or Carb?

If it is an EFI then I would suggest an ultrasonic injector and throttle body clean, check / reset the Throttle position Switch and base idle, make sure all electrical components are OK particularly HT leads, distributor cap and rotor, check operation of ISC motor and if you really want to go all the way have a look at the 02 sensor and coolant temp sensor... shouldn't cost more than $250.00 depending on what they replace if anything and tell them to make sure they call you first before replacing anything with expensive OEM parts.

ISC is about $90.00 off E-bay
TSC is about $110.00 off E-bay
02 sensor $65.00 from Bursons
Coolant Temp Sensor $25.00 from Bursons

A good engine flush and the right oil also makes an amazing difference to how a 2.6 4cyl runs I have found.

I have learnt alot from these forums and over the past month and have managed to get my Daughters TR 4cyl EFI running quite sweetly for a 14 year old car! All it took was a little bit of perseverance and some trial and error!

thanks for that, although all i really wanted to know is what is it exactly that they tune/adjust when they do the electronic tuning. i do however need my injectors cleaned, other than that, all leads, plugs, dizzy cap/rotor, ISC and o2 sensor are brand new. the idling has been reset and adjusted several thousand k's ago, and my next service isnt due for another 1,000 k's where an engine flush is done every time. thanks for your time and advice anyway

a mut2 is not needed to tune the motor there are other ways
earthing diag wires does the same as mut
all it does is set timing to a base setting and drops rpm

The Auto Electrician I use has a MUT II (equivalent) as do another TWO I have used previously.

It may not be genuine Mitsubishi and a "universal diagnostic tool" but for all intents and purposes it's the same tool rebranded as generic.

As for software he does all the Auto Elec work for his local Mitsi dealer and downloads software updates regularly in return for good recharge rates on the work he does.

It all comes down to finding a decent service provider I guess.
