not a big fan of the monroes, KYB are on both mine and my brothers magna and they have a really good return rate without compomising ride quality. you will probably find everyone has their own preference though so dont take it as gospel.

Well really the best would be yellow and then red koni's. Other members seem to be happy with their KYB's.

You get what you pay for. I have had everything over the last 30 years on everything from Lancer hatchbacks to Brocks (4 of em) to big 6 BMW's to MR2's to Magnas. I have changed the shocks in every one of them. A few conclusions for you:
1/ Bilsteins and Konis are the choice items for quality of ride/handling compromise
2/ Konis are rebuildable and so will last forever. Whilst there are a few people who will rebuild Bilsteins they are not factory intended to be rebuilt
3/ The Bilsteins will start to leak a little after 70,000km. Whereas I had Koni Special D's on my TP wagon for 13 years and 230,000 km with no leaks. And whilst there was a little wear on them at those k's that was easily fixed by pulling them out and just adding a quarter of a turn to them to stiffen them back up
4/ KYB's are good second string option to the above but are not as well valved and do not last nearly as long
5/ Monroes are bottom of the tree. A cheap quick fix which you will need to redo in 70,000km when they are knackered.

I am running Koni adjustable yellow Sports on my TF Sports - magic.

Are KYB's any stiffer to stock suspension?

+1 KYB

I believe they're slightly firmer.

From the information here and speaking to people at suspension places, Monroe GT are too firm and Monroe Sensatrac are too soft.

+1 is a good way to describe the increase in firmness re KYB's. For the money they are a good start. Any you're right about the cost of the Koni yellows Gremlin. But I freely admit to not being able to help myself with cars when it comes to good expensive stuff - my own worst enemy (or so my wife says)lol

Reminds me of the genuine Alpina camshaft I got for my 635CSi which cost me $1600 in 1995  Worst part? Customs 'dropped' the first one, broke it clean in half and would not admis liability. Had to go and buy another one  But hell did the car go after that - forged pistons, B&B - 186kw at flywheel from 2 valve single cam straight six....

the guy at my local suspension place that i had a chat to regarding suspension said that the KYB's dont come in a 'low' model and that they are exactly the same as stock magna shocks...

WTF... is this guy just a dick or do i believe him?

when i picked up my lovell springs the other day.. my state distributor for Koni told me that there is no such thing as a Koni shock for a magna.. what a tool.

Hi, I new here and have just purchased my first Magna. It's a '97 Altera with 82,000Kms and came lowered. I'm trying to identify what exactly has been fitted as I have been having some issues with driveways & vibrations through the car at 50/60Kms/h as if going over corrugation.

On the front driver's side it has Monroe Shocks AW349526 and King Springs KCFL-42.

On the rear driver's side it has Monroe Shocks AW339363 and King Springs KCRL-43.

My guess is that it has been done on the cheap using original shocks & bump stops which are damaged. The local Pedders tells me my front shocks are too firm & the spring have all sagged.

They advised my the front should be 630mm (my L/H side is 570mm & the R/H side is 575mm) and the rear should be 620mm (my L/H side is 540mm & the R/H side is 550mm) and wanted me to spend almost $1500 to fit new suspension.

Could someone please advise me exactly what I have so I can make an informed decision on what next to do.

I may have the option to purchasing a TH Magna which was written off because the Driver's side doors were both ripped off when the old man owner did not put it in park and it took off on him. Might put the standard suspension of the TH onto my TE as both have done around the same Kms.

What he probably meant was that there aren't any shorter-travel shocks available, only the same length as the standard shocks.
