have you done this sort of work before?
Invest in a gregorys or something similar to help you along the way.
Umm set aside a day or two and a few band aids
take off all acc. belts
probably have to take PS pump out too
usually make sure number 1 piston is at TDC and make sure crank pulley is aligned with mark
make sure cam gears are aligned with mark.
Um
take our engine mount so support engine on a few bricks or something
loosen tensioner
Belt comes offy
unbolt your water pump (good idea to drain coolant first lol)
make sure there is no gasket residue left on the block surface
make sure new gasket is fully covered in gasket goo (blue one)
Ummmm yeah hardest bit is getting the belt back ON

232xxxkms so yeah im going to do it with the water pump, save time later
You Have to take the timing belt off to replace the water pump. So unless it was replaced less than30-40k ago then I'd replace it at the same time.

DO the belt regardless as the cost is minimul compared to it failing.
Also do your cam and crank seals at the same time and might as well replace your rocker cover gaskets, blind plugs and stem seals if needed.
You will not know the car after all this.
Make sure you do not over tighten the belt either.

SOrry for digging up an old thread but I would rather this be in the one place. Do you need the special tool as described in the manual to tension the belt?

Just the manual says that a tool is needed for the TR/S. I'm guessing it can be done without :)

The only special tool you need is a socket with a slot that goes on the end of the crank so you can turn it when you do the timing belt.I used an old 1 1/8 inch socket and cut a 8mm wide slot as for the tensioner just use a large screw driver and push the tensioner back.
