Hi Guys
I purchased a second hand 2 1/2 year old TJ Magna Advance a few weeks ago and have been very happy with it. I've come across this great little website for magna owners so figured I'd hit you guys with a question thats been bugging me.
I've heard rumours that recent Magna automatics were semi intelligent and adjusted themselves to a drivers style. First off is there any truth in this or is it purely a rumour. If this is the case is it possible for me to reset this learning process so it adjusts to my style of driving rather than the previous owner?
Thanks for any answers in advance.

Hey Slayer;
Interesting post you had there.. i *think* somewhere amongst all these posts... (previous posts) we discussed something along those lines... and yes.. ive heard of what your talking about...
but fortunate for me... my gearbox dont need adjusting to my driving style.... COS ITS A MANUAL!!!
BOOOOOOOOO - YA!!! WOOT WOO!
sorry..
i dont know about the gearbox 'adjusting to driver style' but i know the engine management system can adjust simple things like fuel curb, air ratios and the likes with small modifications to the airintake, exhaust etc etc...
any corrections?? :-k

Thanks for your reply Gold BOOYA :)
Yeah as I said its still a rumour to me and I figured this was as good a place as any to find out the truth. Hopefully someone can come forward and clarify it for both of us :)
In my searching of the forum I didn't come up with much but I probably wasn't searching for the right terms as it's a bit sketchy to me.
once again thanks
Hi Slayer,
Ill talk to the guy in our Mitsubishi team and get them to ask the designers over at Mitsu themselves.
Give me a day or 2.
From what I recall, the tip tronic's are the auto's that adjust themselves to your style of driving..

INVECS -II is what they call the "intelligent" transmission..
Yes it does work... I've experimented with my old TH Sports before and it does actually learn from your driving style...
EG. If you are the high revving driver, the ECU actually holds the revs for you before changing gear automatically.. I've also tried with the easy going drive before and the transmission changes at slightly past 2100rpm.. The great thing is that it "learns" fast too!
I am not sure about how much more "intelligent" the new series 5 speed tippie is but I've heard great reviews about it from the press..
CHEERS!

Thanks for your replies guys
Bain: that would be great and answer straight from the source.
MagnaV6Sports13: That sounds very promising are you suggesting though that it doesn't need to be reset and it will learn from my general driving now. Basically my worry is its been set up for the person who owned the car before me style. I've just had a few weird moments where I'm heading up a hill and I get a rough gear change almost like letting a clutch out to quick followed by a jolt also had a couple moments or weirdness in performance i.e merging onto a freeway. Its nothing major but thought that might be the cause keep us posted guys :)
regards Slayer
yeah they do learn - it depends how long the other people had it as to how long it will take before it changes to your style - i would say probably a week. If you wanna clear their memory though just disconnect the battery terminal for 20 mins or so.. it will change roughly for a short time but then will start to learn quick enough..
I have a 99 TH sports and the box is great.. its learnt my style really well - so well infact that it changes to third at a light throttle press since its expecting me to redline :)
after wendy has been driving (my better half) it changes at 3000 rpm or below all the time till i get it to know its me again :)
But its got excellent software thats for sure - best auto box ive ever driven !

well.. MY tranny box never has any arguements about gear changing.... its my left foot combined with my left hand that adapts to my right foot driving style.. ;)
this learning thing... 'its all in the mind'
haha
BOOYA
pfft.. at least mines a 3.5 ;)

Hmm thats what I wanted to hear guru I suspected disconnecting the battery would reset the computer. I'll still wait upon confirmation from bain before doing anything as I want to make sure my magna advance supports this and its not just a sports/vrx method.

Yeah the auto transmission does learn your driving style. I have been told that it only takes about 100-150kms of driving for the transmission to have adjusted to your driving style.
I drive a TF advance and resetting the ecu (engine management) is beneficial as it resets the fuel mappings etc and also the transmission ecu.
I used to have a TE (which I think is the first of the intelligent transmissions.. not sure) and they used to have problems with the ecu and the software they used for the "intelligence" they would develop a heavy shift commonly between 2nd and 3rd that could generally be rectified by resetting the ecu etc. I actually sold my te because of an issue with the ecu and transmission.
With several different software versions they rectified the problem in the TF's up. Invecs-II transmission software was then produced for the 5 speed auto trans and now has very refined software and is considered one of the best... only let down is that the transmission boxes arnt terribly strong and whilst good day to day... dont like alot of punishment :) (However mine is still going strong... but I get the tranny serviced at regular intervals)
My recomendation would be to disconect your battery as mentioned above, and if this doesnt fix your problem you may want to book your car in for an auto tranny service as you can get some slipping etc when the oil in the box gets a bit old/burnt.
Good luck with it anyway!!

Thanks LiquidHotMagna
I gave into the temptation and my car is currently sitting out there with a terminal disconnected off the battery will leave it for an hour or so then give it a shot :)

I had one of the first TE Magnas that Liquid was talking about.. Couple that with the fact that I shared the car with two other drivers, the computer was getting very confused...
Hardly a problem now since I'm the main driver and I switched to a tiptronic mission, but I really can relate to the suddenly unwanted gear changes... Light pressure on the accelerator and the car thinks you want to scream away and so downshifts, then realising, you ease off the throttle and it upshifts again... up down up down... Maybe not that bad, but something like that... I think someone mentioned getting the ECU re-chipped under warranty in a previous thread...

So you switched ur tranny for a tiptronic one??? what was involved?? was it expensive??
Have been thinking about doing this for a while now.if not that a manual conversion :)

I think he means he swapped to tiptronic in his new car.. ie.. it came with it :D:D
Hey Peeps,
Just got word back from the guys.
The Tiptronic box is an intelligent gearbox in that it learns the rev curves as you drive. Hence how it changes gears to your style of driving. Apparently it takes a couple of hundred km's to figure it out.
The early tiptronics werent all that good at this, but a revision of the software and a flash update fixed this for a majority of the transmissions.
Mitsu only just released a new version of the ECU software about 3-5 weeks back now (I had my Tiptronic gearbox updated when it went in for a service)
If you are getting a slip in gears.. where the gearbox stays in neutral before going into another gear, get it checked out by a Mitsu dealer, most likely they will update the software.
